How did you get your first source of quartz?

In my first game, bascially similar. Quartz wasn't too far, but the straight path to my base had a cliffside and chasm in the way.

Recent new game with a friend; started in Rocky Desert, and Quarts was a fair distance away. Once we unlocked Tractors , we made a roadway to deliver loads of raw quartz from the mines to our main base. (fed on coal, which was harder to find/get near the quartz...).

I'm really looking forward to unlocking Trains again....

The conveyor lifts are hidden in the concrete cuboid I often do so.

First Quartz was close, just a sheer cliff edge and long drop in between. Ramps + conveyors solved that problem. (Northern Forest / Western Slopes area)
