Running out of space?
I see these Youtube videos with these giant manifolds that cover 19x24 or even 40xsomething.. I am having trouble even fitting all the discrete stuff I want, let alone manifolds. I cant seem to find that much flat land in the Green Fields? Are people building in the desert or something?

Ah right so it's not like Valheim or something where foundations are going to collapse. I can just start on a hill and build a floating platform?

Yes you can.
Or rather than starting on a hill, you can just build a tower or ramp to gain elevation to start your floating factory.

basically you can build a whole factory in the sky, flying around

Arcane you mention the green fields , i started my first of 2 bases their , as you know their are cliff edges at different levels so they are difficult to build on but its easy to sort out.

go to the top of the cliff edge at the back and build a row of foundations on it , next expand outwards and yes you foundations will look stupid because they will be floating in mid air.

To make them look sensible make vertical foundations underneath the ones that are in mid air so that in effect you are boxing the cliff edges in.

Note .... take care when doing this because their are some limestone and iron ore nodes near where you are going to be working , if you get too close to them you will have to use vertical conveyors to get them to reach your foundations.

this is a screen shot of my above description you may recognise the area , look at how big a level base area you can have by doing what i described above

It's quite interesting how you interact with the terrain in this game. You really want to avoid it, which translates to needing to build high enough to clear the nearby hills. You never really look into how it's formed more than that, except if you want to run a truck line. Example: if there was a gaping hole in the middle of the map, that would be a great place to build. It's kind of a shame, really, that all the beautiful land features get reduced to "How high do I need to be to build over it."

Hello Bookslayer , i take on board what you say and the only reason i posted the screen shot was because the poster of this thread asked what to do when running out of space. The picture i posted is the only area i have altered the landscape , in fact unlike most people i do not build high in the sky , ALL my buildings are on level ground because i like to build out in the open and the ironic thing is that if you look at that screen shot again i have not even used the ground lol.

Take a look at my posting titled ....This is why i dont use trains , trucks and drones.... the conveyors link the grassy fields to an huge area next to the waterfalls and i have made a second base using hundreds of foundation blocks on the water , if anyone thinks a super highway of conveyors is a cop out then all i would say is try it and see how long it takes.

bye for now

You can build in concert with the terrain if you're imaginative. For example, some things I've done:

The canyon in Grass Fields, has my storage array. I have a platform at top-of-canyon level, aligned with ground level either side. Then underneath, inside the canyon, is all the beltwork that feeds it.

The waterfall at the south east of Rocky Desert, has a giant rock pillar just north. Below it at waterfall level I have a battery factory built as if it's hanging from the cliff side, and I have drone ports mounted in a ring* around the rock pillar near the top, again as if they are hanging from it.
(*There's only 3 drone ports so far so it's not actually a ring)

The giant suspended rock slabs at the south-east of the new update 6 Spire Coast, I have a factory hanging from the underside of one.
