There are no secrets in the game, we know all!
Fairly certain this is likely a bug. But it's a really useful one so here's hoping the devs have more important things they want to fix.
And if I'm going to be clicking that option sooner or later anyway, I may as well do it sooner and in a way where it now has a dual function.
I already know about the option to swap out to other crafting options while the auto is in effect. From what you describe it seems that's a feature no matter how you auto the crafting.
