Compact coal not worth it?
I did some math on feeding coal generators with compaced coal and the results are not very promising.

I calculated how much power there is left to feed the grid if you don't underclock unless you need to match numbers.

For the power consumption I calculated with Mk. 1 miners on normal nodes for the 60 per minute production and Mk. 1 Miners on pure nodes for the 120 per minute production with the formula found here:

https://satisfactory.fandom.com/wiki/Clock_speed

Compacted coal
60 Items per minute results in 525,576 MW fed to the grid.
120 Items per minute results in 1116,59 MW fed to the grid.

Standard coal
60 Items per minute results in 269,75 MW fed to the grid.
120 Items per minute results in 535MW fed to the grid.

Combined 60 compact coal with 60 coal
60 sulfur per minute
120 coal per minute
Resulting in 795,326 MW fed to the grid.

The Water Extractors and Assemblers consume most of the extra generated power and when underclocking gets linear this recipe will serve no other purpose than being a door to Turbo Fuel.

With underclocking saving power and increasing building demand you can build a sea full of underclocked extractors and a tower of underclocked assemblers to get more power into the grid, but if this gets linear, you will have big punishment for your work in the coming update.

Is there a way to improve this recipe or will it be just a door to turbo fuel?

Interesting. It seems they missed the power consumption of water extractors. Or I missed something.

If memory serves me right they changed the compacted coal recipie and made compacted coal a poor choice for the coal generator.

According to https://satisfactory.fandom.com/wiki/Compacted_Coal there was a change at Update 3, "Fuel value re-balance from 600 to 630MJ, also nerfed the conversion from 150% to 100% which reduced the maximum production by 33%."

From some cursory research, it would appear the best use of Compacted Coal (other than Turbofuel) is to make Black Powder more efficiently (from a power consumption standpoint); although this dramatically increases the amount of sulfur in your gunpowder.

Given the other late-game uses for sulfur (Aluminum, Batteries, Nuclear Power), it seems reasonable to suggest that it is probably best not to make Compacted Coal in the late game.

Considering how much things I blow up per minute I will never need more than 2 nobelisks per minute, which can be made from the impure node in northern forest. When upscaling sulfur I can always move my supply for nobelisk over there.

To nutpick I could save a little bit coal with compacted coal for nobelisk but I can allready make over 20k solid steel ingots, so it's indeed not very relevant to use compacted coal for nobelisks.
Another reason to call the recipe obsolete.

Even with 50.4, nuclear fuel rods, 780 batteries(will I use that much drones?) and uranium waste processing the sulfur supply isn't fully depleted, considering using the right recipes.

Oh, but do keep in mind that we're getting a huge variety of ammo for the rebar gun, rifle, and nobelisks with Update 6; that could change things considerably.

I prefer melee for most fights, any other than alpha hog/ crab. It might change indeed with the coming update.
But at this moment I build storage containers in a spitter fight to get the line of sight broken in open areas.
I even stopped 1 of 2 stingers from coming at the same time by dropping a conveyor pole in front of one of them :)

I like to get the spitters to shoot each other; I find it hilarious when one is so eager to kill me that it shoots the one I'm in melee range of in the back. It hurts them, too; I've seen them die from it.

I just wanted to point out the part of the wiki showing the input materials needed for 60/min with both recipes. With fine powder, there is a reasonable decrease in coal use, but quite a large decrease (almost 2/3) in sulfur. This is one of those rare magical recipes with no downsides or tradeoffs, like cast screws in the early game.

Aye, but then you have to consider that compacted coal is half sulfur... so it's actually an increase in sulfur usage, not a decrease.

technically the standard black powder recipe is (sulfur cost only)

2 sulfur to make 1 black powder (1 to 0.5)

the alt (fine black powder)
is 3 sulfur to make 4 black powder (1 to 1.3333)

Huh, so it is. My apologies, I mathed incorrectly.
