A normal node can output 60/min, so 2 smelters
A pure node can output 120/min, but the mk1 belt is 60/min so you can only get 60/min out of it, so 2 smelters. Once you get mk2 belts which are 120/min, then you can upgrade to 4 smelters.
To make it simpler, the purity of a node acts as a multiplier to the extraction rate.
Impure: 0.5
Normal: 1
Pure: 2
Simply multiply the extraction rate of the miner with the node purity multiplier to see what you will get out if you use the miner at 100%.
Clocking my smelters to 25% speed means they eat about 10% of the power. Once I can afford to be spendy on the power side of things I'll replace the Mk.1 Miners with Mk.2 Miners and overclock them, and crank the smelters up to full bore... et voila, 4 times the production without having to build a whole new factory.
Edit: You will then see something like "Iron Ore (Impure)" which is telling you that it is an impure node so it will have the 0.5 multiplier.

The icons only last as long as the nodes stay in the compass but long enough to have a good look saving a wasted journey to a low purity node.
