is it optimal to do 2 smelters or 3 per mk.1 miners?
tryna optimize my start

Depends on the node purity. An impure node plus a mk1 miner can only output 30/min, so only one smelter is needed.
A normal node can output 60/min, so 2 smelters
A pure node can output 120/min, but the mk1 belt is 60/min so you can only get 60/min out of it, so 2 smelters. Once you get mk2 belts which are 120/min, then you can upgrade to 4 smelters.

It depends on the node, Pure, Normal or Impure. A Mk1 miner will do 120, 60 or 30 items per minute. For example, 4 iron smelters off of a Pure node miner, 2 off of a normal node miner or 1 off of a impure node miner. Assuming the smelter and the miner are set to 100%

What was said above (and above that).

To make it simpler, the purity of a node acts as a multiplier to the extraction rate.
Impure: 0.5
Normal: 1
Pure: 2
Simply multiply the extraction rate of the miner with the node purity multiplier to see what you will get out if you use the miner at 100%.

I "optimize my start" by building as if I have later-game tech already, and then underclock my machines to meet the actual current production.

Clocking my smelters to 25% speed means they eat about 10% of the power. Once I can afford to be spendy on the power side of things I'll replace the Mk.1 Miners with Mk.2 Miners and overclock them, and crank the smelters up to full bore... et voila, 4 times the production without having to build a whole new factory.

I didnt even know purity was a thing, how do i see that?

You can see that by looking at the resource node itself. So just look down while standing on it.
Edit: You will then see something like "Iron Ore (Impure)" which is telling you that it is an impure node so it will have the 0.5 multiplier.

Or press E to interact with the miner itself, and it will tell you how much ore per minute it can produce... assuming you've unlocked the productivity display (HUB, Tier 1; Logistics).

I see 60 per min, is that good ?

That is "normal", neither good nor bad. If you now look down at the rocks under your feet, you will see the node itself; there should be an on-screen indicator that says something like "Press E to pick up Iron Ore (normal)".

That means that you have a normal node (assuming you use the Miner MK.1). So pretty decent (for the early game) and more than enough for the very early start of the game.

You can make this and reduce 3 lines of iron plate to 1 line of iron plate. In this way you can use all the 60 ore and make all the items.

Since U6, you can also see the purity of the nodes on the map after you use the Resource Scanner.

The icons only last as long as the nodes stay in the compass but long enough to have a good look saving a wasted journey to a low purity node.
