Crude oil > heavy oil residue > diluted fuel > plastic/ rubber
Overclock the oil extractor to get the most crude out of one node.
Also check how much plastic and rubber you need for computers and other stuff to automate.
When it comes to fuel make sure you have enough to power those factories and some extra for expansion. 12 fuel = 150 MW
Always take care of byproducts with reprocessing or sinking and packaging if required.
Cool.
There's no water really close to there, so your best bet is to make a plastic/rubber facility. If you want to start by making fuel, that's ok... but you'll be better off making fuel with one of the diluted recipes, which require water. Look to the northwest, the Spire Coast has a bunch of oil, and a bunch of water - that's where you should put your fuel refineries, once you find enough hard drives to get the diluted fuel recipe(s).
Were it me, I would just push all 4 nodes into plastic and rubber, maybe use some of the plastic for packages and fill 'em up with jetpack fuel. Without easy access to water, those 4 nodes are probably best suited to producing a nice little supply of plastic and rubber that should last you for quite some time.
TL;DR: It sounds like the advice you got was quite reasonable.
Oh... then you're missing 2 more pure nodes to the north, and there's plenty of water right there. Fuel power plant for the win; go gather some hard drives and get that diluted fuel recipe!
Rubber gets used for turbo motors, radio control units, cooling systems, heat sinks and modular motors, There are alternate recipes with rubber but I'm not fond of them. It's a limited resource.
With the pipe limit being 600, you can do 20 rubber or plastic refineries per pipe.
Right now, all my fuel generators are fed by diluted fuel from waste of rubber and plastic production. Roughly 100 GW worth. That's about to change with excess oil from Spire Coast.
