Uranium Problems
Uranium keeps screwing me over. I went to build a miner on a normal limestone node but couldn't because there was uranium on it. I couldn't remove it because I would die from radiation. I was very early game, so I didn't have the radiation suit. I think it's a real problem that Uranium can just spawn in places that heavily inconvenience players who don't have the radiation suit. I think the radiation suit should be unlockable earlier in the game. Even if you can't use it for power, you should still be able to move it. Also, unrelated, my lizard doggo brought me a barrel of nuclear waste once. I was quite confused.

Eat food faster than the radiation can kill you. Grab the item, run away from the location, drop it where it won't be a problem.

Actually, I've noticed quite a bit more uranium scattered about to annoy me than my Update 5 play through(s). Had several chunks near my starting location which gave me endless grief, so the struggle IS real. ;-)
Uranium sticking out of limestone nodes sounds like a mistake. Might want to report it as a bug.

The Lizard Doggos will occasionally bring you either Uranium ore or Uranium Waste. The best way to deal with it is to have 2 chests connected by a long belt and put the 2nd one in a location where you are never going to go, like on Foundations over the Void.

I usually take only about 5-6 hp damage from the radiation as I transfer it from the doggo's inventory to mine then to the chest.

I have had Uranium deposits get generated near my drop zone on my first attempt at playing; I simply restarted the game and this time, no Uranium.

Uranium deposits seem to be more common in the higher difficulty biomes. I've encountered several in the Red Jungle

The radiation goes faster than food once the uranium is in your inventory.

All this is not a problem
I had also mined such a uranium rock very early and died, that means
"Problem recognized Problem banished"
Just avoid them and there are so many material nodes that are not contaminated just take them first.
Later you have the suit and do not forget to put on the mask with iodine filter in the inventory.

Foundations above the empty yes but certainly not to store atomic waste that is for me best construction area even multi-story down.
Also have stations and train tracks under the map and just down just before the death zone comes, the atomic waste storage.

And is expandable at any time

The radiation goes faster than food once the uranium is in your inventory.

It does sound like a bug as HTTP said but would a workaround be to fill your inventory so you can mine the uranium chunk but not pick it up?

You can't dig chunks with full eq
