It's a smart thing to do if you put your combinatorial work above / below your machinery. I've fallen into enough of a pattern I don't need paint to pretty much know on sight which hole goes with what resource, but I still remember my first time doing this with steamed copper sheets and pure copper ingots. There were refinery elevators everywhere, complete chaos. Thanks, color-coded elevators ...
But yeah my systems are all kind of laid out the same, like if I look up and see floor holes I can tell if they're part of a series of, say, Foundries just by the way they're spaced. I've built the same stuff the same way so many times I see a bunch of holes on the ceiling I know what they're for.
Finding a hole that isn't part of a system, especially if it's just "passing through" taking resources to another floor, that's another matter. In frustration I've been known to turn foundations BRIGHT FREAKIN' PINK!! so I can see where I put the accursed conveyor hole. If it's under a machine you might never find it without the impossible-to-miss bright pink foundation paint.
edit: Actually "under a machine" gives you a warning from below. Under a belt is a pretty good hiding place.
They can be used as vehicle fuel and is the longest lasting early fuel type, outperforming liquid bio fuel and regular fuel, only when you unlock turbo fuel will you get something better.
I've been painting the foundations my trucks run on with yellow and pink (sulfur and quartz) because I kept getting run over while afk lol
