Here's a comprehensive guide on drones, so you can learn what can be done with them:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SatisfactoryGame/comments/mbqex4/the_ultimate_drone_guide/
I had placed my drone on the port where i was having good delivered to , i went to the port where the goods were being collected from and as soon as the drone took off i placed another one so technically speaking i do have one drone per port but both doing the same route.
That's correct.
Each port can only have 1 Drone assigned to it as the Drone's Home Port (the one you build the Drone on). But any number of Drones can deliver, one at a time, to any given Port as a Destination.
... any drone can deliver from any port to any other port; this is an important distinction.
It means you can set up many drones transferring materials from one port to another port; the number is limited only by the amount of time it takes a drone to move from one port to the other and back again, landing and taking off at both locations. Well, that and being able to supply them all with batteries.
