USELESS AUTOMATION
Hi, I was casually playing satisfactory, when somthing came to my mind and iI want to know your opinions on it. Do you think its worthy to automate early project assemby parts (like smart plating for example)? I seriously dont know. Please help.

Alright, thank you all for helping me with my problem then!:steamsunny:
Automate everything. Worst case you have a bunch of extra parts in surplus that you can just divert into the Awesome Sink for coupons.
Depends. If your planning on building a more centralized area then probably not (depending on when you plan on doing it). Note that smart plates and the lower tier project assembly parts ARE used in the higher Tier Project Assembly parts so having extra production going in right from the start isn't a bad idea since project assembly parts are for the most part slow to make. Automating just a single smart plate assembler for example right at the start can get you a good amount of smart plates ready for the next phase unlock without having to last minute build a bunch since it would take a long time otherwise.
At least.. you should do it as early as u can. In higher tier u get a mind of what "fully automation" could be.. so you will construct a new production over and over again!
How do you guys handle factory design? Is it a giant factory where every resource is refined and turned into components there, or do you refine each resource as much as possible at place of mining and send the components to the factory?

Or do you have it even more spread out?

I find that as you get up the tiers the sheer amount of large machinery is hard to manage in a giant factory layout and I try to 'delegate' as much conztruction as possible to the harvesting areas.

Lovely game and fantastic world though! Too bad we have to asphalt it.
Me for myself: "nearly" each product in a single factory (as big as possible) - but the efficiency is a bit bad.. ^^

I spread out my various facilities over large areas. Gives any necessary expansion plenty of room to grow, plus any future train stations and their inevitable expansion.

Forgive me, it may be a bit small to see, but I have one entire biome nearly spread over with my various factories.
I have one very large facility producing tons of Iron, and thanks to alt recipes only 1 paltry little copper node to make copper sheets, though I will have to expand that soon. Furthest to the right are may banks of coal power plants, whilst to the south is my fresh expansion of fuel power, plastic and rubber production. Eventually the lines will get straightened out and all will become orderly.

That's a fairly ambitious project!

I've not been playing satisfactory for a while - I want to play it with my GF, but the coop worked pretty badly last time we looked at it. Combat and vehicles really weren't synching well. (Is that any better now?).

Next time I pick it up I plan to have a widely distributed production network, with supplying factories - basically anything requiring just one or two materials or components to build (possibly more if made in the vicinity) - will be made off-site, but having final assembly at a central around the elevator.

Looking forward to designing the whole thing. :)

The first tiers you can handcraft loads of reinforced iron plate and rotors. After that you fill an assembler with 50 rotor and 50 reinforced iron plate and tell it to make smart plating. If you remove the space elevator after (or during) launch the next tiers get available and you get some construction materials in return to expand. In tier 3 and especially 4 you want to get more automation.

Remember the oldest form of automation is force of habit ;)

I'm pretty late to the party, but here's my 2 cents:

I mostly agree with your sentiment. Automating SE Project parts is useless, because apart from completing the phase(s), their only value is in the Sink.

But, I say "mostly", because that's kind of true for everything. Every item you produce is either going to sit in a container or get chewed up in a Sink. So, who cares whether you automate this part or that part, right?

Automating project parts basically gives you direction. If all you do is create production lines for the project parts, and you siphon off parts at each step, you will have automated nearly every part in the entire game by the time it's all finished.
for stage 1 i set up one assebler, that made 50 plates from hand-crafted materials lol. i really needed that coal energy

For Phase 1, this is the quickest way and how I do it in my Guide, 90 Minutes to Coal.
I find that the biggest challenge in the game is logistics. Most pathes cannot be navigated by car, even if they don't require you to climb a sheer cliff through a series of zip lines. And they are too long to build a lot of conveyors. And you don't have drones because drones require batteries, which need even crazier logistics. And you have even less patience to build a railroad. I know some people love playing with their model railroads, but I do not share that passion.

As a result, I don't recommend you to invest in automating your project parts factory. You'll have to rebuild it in a more suitable location, once you know what exotic materials you need.
