Really, that bad?
However I did use "Xpadder" to help configure just one button to make life easier.
I have played well over 800 hours and completed all the tiers the game currently has with a 360 controller.
I did, decided to ask anyway. Maybe something changed in the meantime.
If that's the case I assume the Steam Controller with its mouse-like functionality should do fine... It also has a Keyboard function (which doesn't always work). Do you have to use a keyboard to name things? The only thing that bothers me is how do you navigate the menus, such as inventory menus etc.?
Some menus open with a controller but don't close with the same button so you just use the mouse and while you can navigate most menus with a controller it's just easier and faster to also use the mouse.
The game doesn't have great "controller support" but it definitely can be done and is worth the trouble because it's such an awesome game, it just feels natural to me now to use all three.
My current setup doesn't allow for that sadly. I use the controller when I play from an armchair and the PC is too far to connect keyboard + mouse. I have wireless ones too, but nowhere practical to actually put them without it being a hassle. :/ That's why I was hoping for a more complete controller support. I'll think about it for sure. It looks like the Steam Controller can work kinda OK.
If someone wanted to learn about elephants, would you recount what you know anecdotally, or would you send them to a factual source? There have been at least 4 threads on controller support since update 5 dropped and more than two dozen over 2021. Each covers the current status of controller support as well as workarounds very well. In fact, for those that absolutely must play with a controller, taking the time to set up a guide might be beneficial to your ilk. Oh, look, there is one:

And below is the current official stance on controller support:
I already searched, didn't find what I was looking for. I'm telling you this for the SECOND TIME. I wanted up to date and specific answers. I have a Steam Controller for 4+ years now, I'm experienced with it and that "guide" is as basic as it gets and NO HELP TO ME AT ALL.
Hence why I asked, and hence why I got very helpful answers here (exactly which aspects of the game are controller friendly, which ones aren't, how necessary a keyboard is, etc.).
Also, backseat moderating is against Steam's rules, so take care not to (repeatedly) tell other people what to do. Being pushy with others to change their behavior gets close to harassment. That's my 2 cents.
There's very little this config cannot do. Yes, you get full menu navigation (open, close, make selections, etc).
Nothing has changed since I first posted it over a year ago.
Specify WTF you mean by "up to date" info regarding controller support? I'm not re-posting my controller config every week because nothing about it changed, because there's nothing about it TO change. There are limited aspects the controller can operate, and until M$ grows up and makes their chat pad add-on work like an actual keyboard outside of chatting, nothing is going to change, and thus there's no valid reason for random nobodies to declare current, valid info as "out of date", even if its 10 years old. It's not fresh fruits and vegetables, it doesn't go bad.
The devs don't have to add "official" controller support because Steam addresses that perfectly.
Logitech makes great wireless keyboards, including one with a touchpad. Get one.
I play games on a 65" TV while sitting in a recliner across the room with a wireless keyboard on a lap table, drinks and snacks on an end table, and it works fine 100% of the time.
Or you can get a 20 foot HDMI cable and put the computer closer to you than the TV and use a wired controller.
