For Phase 1, handcrafting them is considerably faster and more energy-efficient.

You can't hand-craft elevator parts.

Sh*t. I was thinking about the RIPs & Rotors that make them. Those are faster to hand-craft.

For stage 1 I usually just feed the 50 pieces of each into a lone assembler. Before I need smart plating again, I usually have a dedicated building set up that will producing the launch vehicle parts.

Aye, hand-craft the components, and stuff them in an assembler (or 2, or more) attached to the space elevator to smash through the first one quickly; Coal power is locked behind the first space elevator program, so just make it go.

I typically haven't even picked out a "permanent" location for my space elevator when I do the first 50 smart plating, it's just "jam it in there and go!"

That being said, when you decide on a permanent placement for the space elevator, you will definitely want to build a factory around it; leave plenty of room for adjustment, because it wants different parts for each stage, but be aware that the early parts are used to make the parts it wants in the later stages.

Pretty much same as above, single assembler hand fed for the first tier. But you WILL need to automate them at some point as they are used in every tier.
