Placing water extractors
What's the trick to getting the placement just right?

water has to be deep enough?

I tend to drop pipe crosspieces on foundations in 2 directions, eg "forward" and "left"; You can hold ctrl and see the guide lines, and the extractor will snap to them.

As a matter of fact, I do something very similar for precisely placing the space elevator, but using lookout towers instead of pipes.

Depends on what you think is "just right". What are you trying to do?

I mean trying to line them up with foundations. I can align the pipe output using ctrl to snap, but getting it the right distance away is proving more difficult.

I wonder, could I stick something temporary off to the side where I want the extractor centred and align with that? Time to do some experimenting.

That might work, using the binding box collisions to line stuff up.

Yeah, just tried it with pipe cross sections on either side. It wouldn't snap to the side one but it does give the hologram lines so a bit of waggling let me get them in place.

What I do is build a foundation and then place a pipe support near the edge facing where I want the extractor. Hop up on the support so you're looking down-ish off the foundation at the water but so that you can still see the pipe support. "Snap" to the centerline of the support and slowly look towards you until you're clipping with the foundation. Back off slightly until you're not anymore. Build it right there. Snap all other extractors to the side of that one you just aligned.

the easiest way is using the Lookout Tower, Lookout Tower will provide you a line for snapping the water extractor

If you like your layout to look perfectly in line , and i confess i do if space permits , try the following ..... place temporary foundations and a wall next to where you want to place items in a neat row , next place your buildings/structures , the temporary wall will tell you when you cant move any closer to it. When you remove the wall you will see everything in a perfect row.

The trick is to make sure you can see the pipe crosspiece to the side on your screen while placing; there's some finicky movement involved, and it helps to get some distance (by climbing a lookout tower, for example).

It doesn't really help that the pipe coming out of the extractor is not in the center of the extractor model, but bends to one side. If you're trying to line it up with the center of a foundation tile, or even a snap point, so your pipes are centered down a foundation line, this bizarre design is infuriating. But, OCD is not a virtue, so I space the extractor in the hole I cut out of the lake covering and deal with the pipe when I get to it.
