You start a dedicated server to provide that server to other players.
Its different in that way to a typical server host where you also play while hosting.
So it is like multiple people playing one persons game. You do not have separate goals / advancement.
Correct me if this has changed with the latest update.
You so funny.
OP said they were not familiar.
The info I pointed out is very crucial for gameplay, on "dedicated servers".
The question was what a dedicated server is.
Question was answered. You now come around with random bonus info.
Yeah theres tons of info relevant for playing on a server.
But the question is what the difference between standard player hosting and dedicated servers is.
No need to get pissed just for pointing out that you go off topic. Have a nice day.
Dude, chill. No need to get feisty when all I did was tell them a very important fact about progression on dedicated.
You need to get a life man. Seriously.
Game is too complicated with mass amounts of data being transferred, also needs a lot of resources to do the computation needed to host a game, try adding that on-top of playing the game at the same time and issues occur.
Previous multiplayer mode had de-syncs and lag between the players and the server host, making multiplayer a terrible experience and practically impossible to play.
Devs have now released 'dedicated' server hosting.
Basically they've allowed people to set a machine to be dedicated to being a central connection point for all players, the computation power this machine has is dedicated to dealing with multiplayer connections and hosting the game environment.
Why is this cool?
Basically it should reduce or eliminate de-syncs and lag between players when playing together, it'll take further development to get it perfect but so far it's a good start.
Once it's finished with netcode optimisations in place, the only limit would be the hardware of the server people are playing on.
