As far as I know you only ever needed the Session ID to join people people playing on EPIC.
The only thing you miss out on by not logging in to EPIC was seeing your friends and being able to join them directly in the "Join Game" menu.
Personally I don't think EPIC's store adds enough value to consider using over the offering of their competitors.
Morally I dislike some of EPIC's past and present business practices, especially the lawsuit was revealing in how disingenuous some of their PR statments and campaigns are and have been.
On top of that some of their actions, both as a company and as statements from it's leadership to the press and trough social media like twitter, gives the impression they view the consumers with disdain and contempt.
All in all I consider this enough to not engage with their eco-system and to avoid it as much as possible.
The only victims in their war against Steam are the gamers
Epic is a giant resource hogging pile of malware and I don't want it on my system
Coffee Stain are children who would rather ♥♥♥♥ around than just do normal business
I am a game developer. There's no reason to be a greedy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about it unless you are a piece of ♥♥♥♥ capitalist.
I already own this game. Rest assured I will never give them any more money or buy any more of their games. Ever.
Epic wants to sell me crap on "their" service, I will respectfully decline. When they want to force me into their marketplace while in another, no thanks, @#$% you!!!!
If it weren't for the dirtbag jackhole "exclusive releases" those #@$%-bags keep doing, I probably wouldn't hate them nearly as much.
I'll stick with the pro-consumer platform thank you very much. The anti-consumer platforms can all eat my @#$%@#$%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1) just fyi, a lot of people do not engage in *any* social networks or logins with real data.
but by its very nature, it always seems like "no one" is avoiding these systems cause you only see people who participate, never the millions who don't.
2) most things aren't "free", they just turn YOU into the product. like facebook, gmail and so on.
that said, epic may mine data, but as you've said, not more than steam. epic earns most money by licensing its engine (Unreal Engine) and by selling games. facebook and google produce nothing except the phychological testing and surveillance on the userbase for its customers: governments and businesses.
steam and epic earn money by producing things. I prefer steam but I don't think epic is evil.
to your question: Epic got on the market by creating the impression they want to split the PC gaming market like consoles do the console market. that created insane amounts of bad blood.
I HATED them for this, but in hindsight this seems to have been a public relations snafu of epic ;) proportions, and they've shown through actions so far that they aren't doing that at all, just wanting to bind *game producers to their Unreal engine* which is completely understandable and not really bad for us, the customers.
they mishandled the whole thing terribly from a PR perspective, but they didn't actually do anything wrong or had bad intentions.
this explains why steam never went to war with them imho and why most epic game store stuff relatively quickly comes to steam.
Epic has Chinese investments and that brings us to the core of your question:
on a broader perspective, since Trump, the US has been on a total economic war footing against China. as most outside the US know, but few inside do, there is no real difference between Democrats and Republican presidents. one always continues what the other started.
Bush completely destroyed privacy and citizen rights and Obama continued it, so did Trump, so does the current senile president.
Trump got elected into a massive economic downturn and blamed China for it, then started a massive anti-China campaign which the Democrats just continued, as they always do.
the US's decline has been apparent for ages and is tied to a money system that rewards printing money from nothing and pumping stocks, not physical goods production.
the technical turn is "financialization".
The US went from the production based economy ---> service based economy ---> monetizing consumers based economy.
this last stage treats people like products and fleeces them for everything they have while decreasing quality of life.
it makes the few billionaires who got rich with scams, casinos and financial products richer (Musk, Trump, Hillary, Zuckerberg...) and everyone else poor in the long run. (yes. Tesla does not make money nor will it ever if you subtract the billions of tax money and money it gets forcibly donated year by year for government sanctioned climate scams aka carbon credits)
this must be covered up by fomenting resentment to "something outside" like China or Russia.
China is simply thriving since it's not doing what the West has been doing: financialize its economy. China stuck to producing goods. physical goods.
so the US declared "evil", even though that was what made the US big with Detroit & cars 70 years ago. or Japan in the 80s.
the kids here know nothing about economics, history or how mass control aka politics work, so they just regurgitate the hate they know from TV and blame China and since Epic has Chinese money, Epic.
they don't know or don't care that Facebook is literally, not figuratively a CIA front. it was founded the same day that lifelog, a US intelligence agency project with *identical* description was shelved. core staff of facebook outside the programmers worked previously at the CIA or NSA.
facebook did literal psychological trials on its userbase by flooding some people with negative news and stories and watched the fallout and people becoming sick or depressed. just google it. they admitted it.
but the CIA also admitted it raped and tortured US citizens for ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles during MK Ultra and nobody cares... let alone what they're doing to non-citizens
so a CIA front that drives people into depression and suicide for the same ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles is ok, but when Epic gets investment money from outside mother USA then it's evil.
it's all about control and keeping people angry at the wrong thing
If you don't want to play then don't play. Pretty dang simple.
Oh yeah, they don't have it.
Troll post?
You put allot of effort into this post, seems you might have achieved more going outside and not caring what upsets other people.
I have a working epic account linked to my steam account, yet the game starts promts me to validate, i accept, and still refuses to accept the login. I have to logout and relog every time i launch the game.
Add occasional random crashing and you have a major annoyance.
Not troll. Passion for understanding weighted with my personal point of view. So far I think the thread has been civil and I've gotten some insights.
The part I can empathize with most would be the lack of Value of it.
