You will have to explore and locate a coal deposit to advance to Coal power if you want to leave biomass generators behind ;)
i have a nice coal plant but i maintain a separate biomass grid that handles one side of the map, 5 BM gens all running on solid BF. the more BM gens, the slower they burn through fuel.
i find that when i clear an area to set up a satellite production facility, i produce a ton of biomass and i hate to waste it, so i process and store it and use it in the secondary power grid.
As was mentioned with the organs and carapaces (M.A.M. research), 1 carapace makes 100 biomass and 1 organ makes 200. That's a massive return.
Coal power is the first step in automated power. Until then, you should be burning biomass, not leaves/wood, until you get the chainsaw, then making solid biofuel. You need to collect leaves/wood by hand until then. The chainsaw makes this process faster and you can cut down trees which give wood which make much more biomass.
