Later on you get the Mk.2 Power Pole that has 7 connections, and eventually the Mk.3 Power Pole that has 10.
This will likely require you to travel to find some coal and water. One of the most common ways people build these is to bring the coal to the water as trying to move water when you're first learning about fluids can be difficult. Also, you can run power lines as far as you want and transfer as much power as you want through a single wire. For ease of building, people often have a single power grid so they know where they stand when it comes to power use rather than maintain multiple power grids. Of course you can build individual power plants for your factories for the love of building :)
