My crate exists but is unreachable.
I think this might be my only option - luckily all the time I wasted was in trying to reach my crate so it's not like it'll set back my progress.
It's just frustrating - it feels like there are so many neglected aspects of this game. Investment has really been into screenshots.
If you died in a gas cloud then you can construct a gas mask and filters at home and then go get the crate back.
If you fell off a cliff then exit the game to the main menu and load your most recent save again (After falling off) and your crate will spawn on the edge of the cliff where you fell off.
If you died in the middle of monsters then create a 1-1 tunnel of foundations, walls, and ceilings and make your way into the middle to build around and over top of your crate then loot it.
There is no "completely unreachable" situation of dying in this game. Everything can be recovered.
At that link you can find a lot of useful stuff, even for recover from a really unrecoverable situation...

If you're a new player, I suggest you don't spoil yourself too much with this map though, exploration is a lot of fun and thrill
If you think it's pointless and redundant when people tell you that's how it is then perhaps you should try to accept that it's really just how it is. It's equally pointless to say you're sorry when you really aren't.
There is a way for your stuff to be completely unreachable, just a second ago i was using hyper tubes and i glitched into a rock and my crate was inside it. I had to load back to the day before to have all of my items and tools back.
