Transporting Long Distance In Early Game
I am trying to avoid explicit guides on how to progress "correctly," what resources to prioritize and what not.
I'm currently at Tier 4 and giving myself a little break now that I have coal power up, and I decided to visit the nearest quartz deposit on a whim. I am situated in the "very easy" valley, so I made the roughly 2KM trip to the ones north of the valley.

I am aware that trains and trucks and faster belts are on the horizon in the tech tree in terms of transporting the quartz home, but now that I'm currently standing at that quartz node with the mining rig up and 1000+ iron plates, should I just go ahead and start creating a Tier 1 conveyor belt back to base?
I don't know if doing this is "standard procedure," or if I should hold off on transporting the quartz for now and just plonk down a couple of storage units on site until I achieve one of the more efficient transporting options.

I'd drop down two truck stations and set up an autopilot route myself.

The tier 1 conveyor does a mere 60 units per minute which will in no way meet future demand. Of course, you could go through later and upgrade the belt...

I'd do it anyway. Once you get higher tier belts, you can upgrade your tier 1 by just hovering over it with a tier 2-3-4-5. It'll be more of a hassle but I'd do it. I like trains but I don't really like automated truck stations, they don't feel right to me for some reasons, but to each their own, you can do that if you want.
Now thing is, you don't really need quartz until later in the game, so unless you want to stock up on quartz and silica you don't really need to go through that

My first coal setup was, and still is a good ol' conveyor. Don't be afraid to build paths over terrain to make it easier.

If I were you, I would focus on caterium to unlock the exoskeleton legs, to run faster (also, the 7 connections wire poles). This is my prefered way of moving now (plus you receive less damage from falling)

I'm not entirely sure of what milestone you need in order to have all the required materials to manufacture the blade runners

For some reason, I chose to scout quartz first solely on a whim and arbitrarily assumed it surely has tons of usefulness in the early game, but now that I see that it's uses are largely niche and for mostly mid to late game stuff, I will definitely be prioritizing caterium.

In Factorio, I beeline for the technologies that lead to Exoskeletons, so why not beeline for the Blade Runners, I say!

as far as I am concerned - there are no standard procedures. you do as you like, and what fits your game style and factory design. You want kilometer long belts? go for it (I have many....), do you want trucks and trains? go for it

there is no wrong or right way to do this, only do what you like

That's great, because right now I'm kind of enjoying the adventure of making winding conveyors down mountainsides while dodging alpha spitter projectiles, so I'm sticking to it.

While I'm not out to make a mega-factory, it is comforting to know that I have all these completely optional transportation choices at my disposal, looking forward to trying out the trucks and trains when I get them.
