Hmm, I never gave that a thought about using the gas as a resource. I like your thinking and I hope they make it so.
I think the toxic vents are just meant to be a "higher level" threat/obstacle than the gas plants. They aren't one you can remove, just manage.
Could always be some kind of machine that requires a water input and sucks the poison from the air.
That way it means nothing for exploration (hence Gas Masks), but if your factory encroaches on it, you can clean it up.
