There are a - LOT of nodes across the map. And as you've discovered most are not pure. But you can work around that.

That would explain so much...
I was wondering why the scanner gave me the impression there was hardly any iron/copper to be found in the Dune Desert, only to discovered there are freaking tons of it.
The map is unlocked through quartz research in the M.A.M. There are more than a few things about the game that are not intuitive at this stage of development.
I can see how that looks messy as hell, but I do wish it added the info to the map permanently tbh.
Once you've scanned for any material, all nodes within range should be added (not to the compass just the world map) and you could toggle them all on/off like any other. Right now my map is littered with beacons on all the deposits I found in the Dune Desert...
Might be just me but I find it to be both intuitive and logical to separate advanced electronics like that; research new stuff in MAM, and unlocking other things through the HUB by showing to Ficsit you are worth/ready getting more to handle with recources/tech that are known already. Why give too much to a clone that is defective f.ex.?
Quartz, slugs, paleberry, nuts, and caterium can be indiginous to that particularly planet. Or something like that...
The thing there is, S.A.M. is specifically highlighted as something they know nothing about. Somersloop and Mercer likewise are unknown artifacts.
While the plants and animals it's perfectly believe don't exist elsewhere, Caterium and Quartz are both made out to be well known materials.
Well, yes and no, the fact is that it is still in EA and we know nothing yet if, why or how they're (CS) ever going to implement those in the game world naturally. Tme will tell... sooner or later.
ADA says it herself (itself?) that Caterium is "gold like", and there usually goes a limit on far off you can go with what is similar and what is totally alien. If no one could relate to anything in the game it wouldn't be like it is now with a huge amount of gamers actually liking the game.
So yes, some balance is needed.
If those descriptions changed as you researched them it might make more sense.
Descriptions are one thing yes, but you still need to research every step of the way before being able to use it.
Some steps in the tree is not showing for that very reason, it doesn't know, and later some are showing, so it's a good mix on where you want to go (if you haven't played it before that is).
As for Caterium, the best metals for electrical conductivity are silver, then copper, then gold. It's fairly common to find a mix of all three together, known as electrum or "white gold", which actually can be an almost yellow-gold to yellow-greenish color.
