Foundations in the sky
Anyone build their entire factory on foundations in the sky? It seems more convenient to go up 10 or 20 walls and build my factory.

Good luck providing liquids for power generation or production.

In the sky is a tad pointless. Aside from liquids as Snip said, it would make getting back up a royal pain until you get Hypertubes.

I've built my factory on the high ground where I started, two 4m foundations off the ground. Its more than enough to provide a totally level surface with almost no obstacles.

Can't see why not in the mid-late game... I already flatten the world on high points, why not with the tall mountains... its not that hard. Time consuming maybe.

I think it does, you have to place alot of them though, each 20 meters or less... Didn't try it though.

And every pump requires power, taking up space in your limited electrical grid.

yeah it'll make your fluid related stuff more power hungry to bring that water up higher and higher. but its not impossible. i'd say if you plan to do this, find yourself the highest located water source on the map and build from there. it'll save you some wattage moving that water to the upper layers of the base. then you can simply build downward.

reccomend if you do this make your top floor a hyper tube cannon launch point in all directions. then you can send yourself anywhere super fast!

The other option is of course keeping fluid related stuff close to the ground, and the rest of the factory up in the air.

Say.. build literally right on top of the larger bodies of water. Your lowest level is just above sea level, and can access liquids easily. Your higher level(s) have your liquid independent stuff.

To be honest, I typically just build anything liquid related right near the extractors. Conveyors can easily relocate goods anywhere in the world at whatever rate I need, so it's typically easier to just plop the refineries/coal plants right near their liquids.

true, i guess one could do that, but then it wouldnt be a sky island base, it'd be a skyscraper!

I always put my factory up in the air at least a 3-4 walls high so I have plenty of space to spread out and don't bump into hills.

You don't really need to pump fluids into the air since you can put your power generation next to the water/oil source easily enough.
