untill then Bio Mass is your only option
Having to furiously spam E to pick up loads of leaves/wood is irritating, when it be so much easier if holding down the button automatically picked up stuff.
It takes so long to get access to filtered splitters so you can just dump all types of Biomass into one container for processing, so you have to actively move between multiple to process it.
By the time I got coal I was running 5 fully overclocked Biomass generators, so having to go into each one and fill with Biomass instead of just being able to restock the fuel with the touch of a button is also tedious.

With default clockspeed making 1 iron rod costs 16 MJ
With 200% speed the 1 rod costs 24.2 MJ...
What i do is i handcraft leaves and wood into biomass, then Container -> Constructor -> Container to process it into solid biofuel. That's really simple and handcrafting doesn't take long nor would you need to do it often. Use tier 2 belt to move biomass because it's being used at 120 / min in 1 single constructor. The making of solid biofuel is significantly slower to handcraft so don't.
Something like Hub (2) + 6 bio generators should last well enough until you get coal generators. Please confirm the ratio was 3 water pumps to 8 coal generators?
Edit: Yes, wiki confirm. Also that needs coal 120 / min.
All that changes is they consume the fuel faster, but you don't have to fuel as many.
I guess in some respects, the biomass is to encourage you to begin exploring early so you can gather more materials while your factory is producing.
Later on I kind of miss it. :D
As I build different setups to automate leafs, wood, and cadaver into biomass (and later biofuel) it basically servers as an important automation stepping-stone very early on.
They already exist right now. There are mods that add renewable energy available right after you finish tier 0, and more renewable energy options in further tiers. I played around with them, and they are a nice addition to the game.
