On the topic of character customization.
I like the game, I think it's one of the best if not the best factory building game. This is not criticism of any kind about any of those parts of the game. I just want some character customization. The thing about this is that I feel like the devs ONLY want female engineers in the game. And I don't get that. I would get that in a game with a solid character. We all like Faith Connors, Samus Aran, Lara Croft... etc. But In this type of game, I'd like to express myself in a more efective way than just "female engineer with spacesuit on" I know this might be controversial due to current political drama and all of that stuff. But c'mon, I'd like to be a bird-person, or a genderless robotic engineer? This isn't about gender, sex, sexual orientation or anything like that. It's about player choice.

I'm aware that this might or not be possible in future versions of the game. Just puting my two cents on this topic.

Devs hinted that only color change for multiplayer.

Why only color change? What I'm afraid of is that they are trying to make some kind of political statement by limiting player choice. If it was a character driven game I would understand constricting choice. But that's the issue. This isn't recore. I don't have a name or a face. The only hint I have to an identity or a way to express myself is a tightly dressed curvy woman in a spacesuit. Which becomes monotone real fast in multiplayer. color change isn't enough I think.helmet changes, different body types, robotic lims (factory work is dangerous) that would be cool.

They are - Wait for fun and exciting mods or stop playing.

The game is fun on itself. But if they're trying to make a political statement. I might thing they're progressive and thinking they're being feminist. But they just made a big and unethical mining and planet destroying company that ONLY hires women to send them into that dangerous planet to die. So... pretty mysoginistic company this guys are making you work for and making "fun" to work for. And I thought that diversity was strenght. Not very diverse characters in this games. One woman with only one body type. Everything works against progressive ideology.

I don't want to create some kind of controversy. I'm just pointing out that, if they're trying to make a political statement in a game about destroying a planet with nuclear waste and fracking with clonic undiverse women drones isn't the most effective way of showing it. Just saying. I don't care about not having politics in my games... but since there are at least be consistent and do it good.

The color change stuff has been confirmed by the dev team on recent streams.
Anything beyond that has not been confirmed.

I hope they add real character customization. the game is cool and fun, that would be great for multiplayer interaction. No man's sky benefited a lot from this feature.

In the long run, it could be a great way to extend the purpose of the awesome shop.
I dont think it's anywhere near a priority though, nor should it be.
Barbanegra Jun 11, 2020 @ 12:29pm
Right now it shoudn't. But the way of the devs of comunicating the posibility isn't really good.

for crying out loud. Is this going to happen every time devs use a female model for something? You didn't hear us shouting about 'ooooooooh political message' about the male model in factorio or in the millions of other games. I'm all for character customisation but this crying about 'ugh women. Must be political message' is getting real old, real fast.

And yes, I saw the line OP made about wanting to be genderless but I get the feeling that if the devs used a male model then the outcry would be a lot less and there definitely wouldn't be talk about political messages.

Might be that less people would be annoyed if the model was male. but I'm not asking to be male, I'm asking for a feature. And what worries me is that the feature is being helf back just for political reasons. If that's something that I'm right on. Then the game is being worse for political reasons. If we agree that character customization in a multiplayer game of this kind is a good thing.

Let's try this one more time - The choice is absolutely political, and if you don't like it. The door is over there. This is what devs have stated time and time again.

It honestly can't be said any simpler than that.

What is the problem with having the option to choose the gender? Amazing how sensitive people are today. I agree with the OP.

Last word I heard from a developer (Jace) on this forum yesterday was,

"uhh just because she's female doesnt mean shes a political statement. its not like we thought "its gotta be female". our concept artist just made a character and we thought it was cool. I think she wanted it to be a woman, but idk thats her choice she's the artist. the company didnt force anything."
