I've never found trucks to be all that useful.

That said, miles and miles of conveyor belts can eventually harm game performance. You'll likely want vehicles (trains, most likely) at some point.

Personally I found using truck to be a bit of hassle and potentially lethal. Especially if you don't keep track of where truck main routes are.

Easier to just lay down track for train and forget about it.

The main reason is aesthetics. Trucks just look cool. They cost less than long Conveyor Belts and you dont have to upgrade them. Plus you can switch the product they Haul relatively easy.
But, strictly from an economic perspective, the best transportation method are always Conveyorbusses.
I hope CSS revamps them in a future update.
Trucks are nice if used properly, what you could do is run trucks from outposts to a Train Station or your main bus, so that you dont cover the world in Conveyors since they are cheaper and haul more than the Sugar Cube. when paired with trains, they really shine nicely from small outposts to the stations.

Also for exploring and setting up outposts vehicles rock. Trucks decent for moving from a mini outpost to a train station for transport to factory. Less need for belts. Though should clear a slightly wider path then the truck to make sure it follows same path with out hitting a tree. When setting path drive slow. last time i played i did runing into few times where a rock or some thing would get me stuck or bounce me off track.

What i did as explored was leave beacons and named them. 1.1, 1.2, 1.3.. ect. then when set path i went from beacon to beacon so didnt get as lost lol

Trucks can be usefull if, you dislike miles of coveyers belts ( like me )

its my worse issue with this game, trucks or train getting exactly what i want where i want it, i have never been pleased or happy with this ever period

long belts solve the problem, but i hate how looks etc

as you play more and more your going to probably see exactly what i mean here

Trucks are near useless, the bigger ones are almost useful, but still has issues. Trains can move large amount of material, but not more than belts on the same time, yet they are at least funnier. Also belts use no resources (electricity), while trains do, so it is even worse.

I would say, if it is closer than 1000 meter, you should just build a belt, if farther, esp if lot farther you should build trains between, but belts at the two end, you might add extra stops on the train line if needed.

They're fun. Do you need more reason in a game?

The main reason I would always use tractors or trucks for anything that is farther than 500 meters is because setting up long belts is a pain in the ass to do. Especially if you want it to not look like a total abomination and not interfere with your ground travel. It's also a good mix up to me already using belts everywhere.

I also tend to use them over trains, unless there is no straight forward path. Trains have the same problem as belts, a pain in the ass to set up in a way that looks good and is not messing up the ground travel.

making anything that blends in correctly and looks good in this game is basically badnews, thats why everyone builds in the air, this and basic transporation/logisitcs makes construction in this awesome made enironment a dodo

I mean... I definitely don't. I spend time making all of my belts 90" corners, have nice elevator shafts for products and with neatly organised belts going alongside/into buildings.

Even in the wild. Efficient play is dull and boring.

Because making a really long conveyer belt takes more time and resources than teaching the truck to drive to the area. It is also easier to reroute truck later.

Personally, it's all down to your play style. I didn't like trucks because there are still bugs in their pathfinding. For example, there have been numerous records of trucks disappearing off the map, never to return, because their pathfinding algorithm got confused by a stream or mountain in it's path. Likewise, Trains seem to go loco (forgive my pun) if you put more than one on the map and use intersections or share tracks. I've seen enough train madness (ie the other cars becoming separated from the locomotive and moving with a mind of their own and graphical glitches caused by said cars becoming separated from the train, among other things) that for my last 3 playthroughs I've exclusively used conveyor belts, never mind if I have to pull something halfway across the map.

In a game whose main objective is efficiency? Really?
