Belts carry one item at a time and are rated in items per minute. Currently 5 tiers of belts, (60/120/270/480/780) items per minute respectively.
Pipes also have junctions, but a pipe can only have a flow rate of 300m3 a minute maximum.

This is a game where a manifold based construction scheme is extremely effective.
sample: S = splitters, X = machine, M= merger
input - S - S - S
| | |
| | |
M - M - M --- exit
Im not sure how to fix the formatting so apologies. Hope the point still gets across properly.
3 inputs for a merger, 3 outputs on a splitter.
To elaborate a bit more, the splitter splits items in this order.
1. Center
2. Left
3. Right
You can create balancers like in Factorio. But the ability to stack conveyors on top of one another veryiclly (conveyor stackable poles) really makes for some interesting things.
To start with, on a normal vein, a tier 1 drill with tier 1 belts will be able to easily support 3 smeltries, so one splitter per vein.
As things progress, you can start feeding more smeltries with ore.
Everything is based on how much your belts can move items per minute, thats your primary limiting factor.
For example iron ingot smelting is a 30/30 process. 30 iron ore goes in, 30 iron ingots go out per minute.
You then build a belt and connect those smelters to constructors that use those ingots in plates, rods, etc.
Miner -> belt -> smelter -> belt -> constructor(s) -> belt -> storage
Thats the most basic automation layout. It gets more complicated than that, but for now that will suffice as a general discription.
