These aren't exact but you need about 15-20% water coverage, about 5m phytoplankton, and you need to be within the birthing temperature of No.1 in the library.
There seems to be some kind of bug that doesn't let you see the population of your zooplankton going up...
I was on a large map and it took about 20minutes of play time to get stromatalites or whatever they are called to show up.. it will take even longer for a huge map.
One would think that running for MORE THEN AN HOUR would do something...
How the hell you even get 15-20% at level 1?

Thats all but impossible.
Only got like 3%
Hmm hmm hmm... I think I see what's going on here? Stromatolites require specific environments like you've been talking about. 38degrees C, tons of Zooplankton, etc. And the effective way to get that is with plenty of water. The "Huge" map makes that very difficult, so here's what I think are the best choices for making that happen:
1: Import another level! If you've played through the story missions, you can load any of those cubes into a Huge cube in Free mode and you'll start off with a higher level, better brush and more tools at your disposal. Nice and easy start.
2: Import a challenge map. The challenge maps start with a wealth of resources available to you and will help you kick off your world with a bang. It should be pretty easy, since you can just start up a new challenge and save it right away. Bingo, bango.
But maybe you wanna have a map that's all your own? Made from scratch by your own two hands? Then maybe...
3: Start small! You can begin free mode in a small or medium size cube so growing some creatures and gaining levels will come nice and quickly. Once you've established your smaller world, load it into a Huge cube! It'll still be your work, but you won't have to play the waiting game.
4: Buckle in for the long haul. I think during development, the designers wanted to simulate the idea that the genesis of life in an empty world is an improbable and very slow process. So with that in mind, encouraging those first Stromatolites to pop up is gonna take a lot of slow work, but it will work! So if you wanna take your time and build the world river by river, go for it!
Phew! Hope that helps ya out~
