Don't understand the hate for Haseo being a jerk.
I for one actually enjoy having a protagonist that isn't overly nice like every other main character that is written. If you understand his situation then his behavior is completely understandable.

Haseo was a jerk in the anime before the game takes place. Right from jump in the anime it's like someone is holding a gun to his head making him play the game. He has an attitude with everyone around him, an attitude with the friends he makes in the game, and so on. Then, to top it off, he's playing a game that he doesn't really want to play. Then we play the game and it's the same thing.

For me personally, dealing with a jerk in the game is just as bad as dealing with them in real life. While playing, all I wanted to do was kick him in the twins and punch him in the face. Attitude because this, attitude because that, I don't want this or I don't want to do that, and on and on and on. It get's old real fast, for me at least. Granted I haven't played long, but he's just a bad character.

I get his situation and understand what happened. But his attitude was bad from get go.

We deal with jerks all day, everyday, all the time. Even jerks who have it coming to them don't want to deal with them in game. Why deal with one in the game as the character you HAVE to play as? Just my opinion.

I agree that Haseo sometimes is too much of a jerk in situations where there was no need for him to be. However, Haseo is a person that was betrayed (I can't be too much specific because spoilers), you even see that at the beginning of the game, and lost the only persons he cared about. So his tsundere attitude while maybe a bit too much sometimes, it's perfectly understandable.

At the very least, his type of character is very well written compared to many others, and despite him being a jerk I think it's made enough clear even in Vol 1 that he's not by any means a heartless person, just someone that wants to make others believe so.

Other than that, I would just say what anyone that has played all the games would say, that even if you don't like him it's definitely worth to play the games until the end because you'll be surprised how he changes later on and matures as a character.

He's only a real major jerk in vol 1, he grows up and becomes less of a jerk as the game goes on, even in vol 1 the haseo near the end is fairly different than the one you start with.

Edgy jerk is an anime trope, btw. And few people like those, especially if they're main characters. So it doesn't surprise me at all that people don't like Haseo when he makes no effort to be likable, regardless of his situation.

That's good know.

Haseo is something of a jerk but it does make sense if you know who he is from the original game. If you watch .Hack Roots you see he does somewhat mellow with his original guild until things lead him into the rampage of revenge that brings him to the first G.U. game.

it's called character development, all of you are so used of the goody go lucky or whatever cliche character that always is nice and kind. So for me Haseo is fine for me.

exactly most people here are to corrupted with the SAO bullcrap, Haseo has an arc, he start in one point and ended with completely different view at the end, he grow along the games.

I agree, much better being a generic jerk then a generic nice guy. I don't really need his behaviour to be rationalized, some people are just unpleasant and that can be fun too.

i honestly don't mind characters/protagonists who are traditionally nice and kind. i mean, i love kite a bunch from IMOQ- he's one of my favorite characters in general, but that isn't to say haseo is a bad protagonist at all. he has a genuine character arc that builds up over the course of the 3 games, and its handled extremely well.

i won't lie; i dont LIKE early vol 1 haseo. it gets kind of hard and annoying to watch. but that isn't to say i dont think that he was written well, because he was, and his reasoning for even BEING a jerk aren't difficult to understand. just in the context of the universe itself, i can't really like him in the beginning of rebirth that much. im entirely certain that haseo was never written with the intent for the player to like him at all at first though; rather, they were meant to stick with him, and play through GU and see how he grows up as a player/an overall person.

especially when alkaid gets PK'd and becomes a lost one and he's forced to abandon any remaining childish tendencies he has in him. an even earlier moment that comes to mind is when skeith goes berserk and kuhn does a fake out "death" (is it a death? idk, just pretends to have become a lost one) in the arena and all haseo can do is watch as the power he aggressively chased destroys one of his allies

I for one enjoy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Haseo (as i like to call him in that state) due to it being so funny to watch him be mean to everyone.

However his reactions while on occasion are overreacting he generally has proper responses to annoyances due to Atoli, Gaspard and Silabus all bothering him to no end in the beginning. (in fact atoli messing with him constantly for no reason is one of the reasons why people don't like her)

edgy haseo is best haseo and nobody can change my mind. if you want a cinnamon roll protagonist go watch my hero acadamia. lol

Well honestly to a degree he probably has in real life having his parents and medical professionals having told him to not to go into the World(to avoid major spoilers he was in the original coma patients from the original anime sign/quartet games)) Seeing as he was even worse when he was the pker at 12 Sora who got data drained by Skeith and thus merged until Kite beat the waves. Haseo is only a teenager in real life and much more mellowed out than Sora was. In some of the extra files you unlock you find out he has complete amnesia from being data drained during World v1 and scientist was actually annoyed Sora escaped from his Avatar Project but Skeith himself chose Haseo's player as his match when he finally returned Add to it he got scammed then traumatically pked on his first day in game in the roots anime by a pair of psychos.

Do you mean he got pked in the game AND in the roots anime, right? It's exactly the first 5 minutes from vol 1. I just mention that because the way you worded it looks like it happened only in roots, lol.

From watching the anime most of the characters he has to deal with are either annoying af or arseholes themselves working their own angles, it reminded me of when i worked retail and the people i had to deal with so the way he was made sense to me and i was able to relate to that.

Basically this. If I was Haseo I would literally say screw everyone and try to go do my own thing. XD

Don't know how people can question his behavior when he has to deal with Atoli, Gaspard and Silabus. (even though they are suppose to be nice)
