So I bought this yesterday, first impressions...

(If this reads like a review, that is not my intent. My goal is to open a discussion of my thoughts on the game as a new player going in blind, and a couple issues I have with it)

I want to start by saying this game has sat in my wishlist/backlog for a very long time, basically since launch. I actually avoided ever looking into much about the game, other than seeing trailers, screenshots, and having a very basic idea of the story premise. Yesterday I saw it was on sale, and glanced over the reviews for the 1000th time.

Something I hadn't really noticed before, was how many people mention the soundtrack.
Music matters in gaming, Final Fantasy IX is and probably always will be my favorite video game, purely because of its soundtrack. So I purchased NieR because fellow Square fans seem to like the soundtrack, and started the download.

Once I got the game up and running, I knew I was likely in for a good experience, from the menu music. Two issues, this game DOES NOT like running at 4k. This was very disappointing for me, because I know the issue is not my machine. I run the FF7 Remake at 4k and keep 60 fps. But it is what it is, 1080 is fine, except I get these weird transparent letterbox spots on the top and bottom of my screen during all cut-scenes no matter the resolution. Decided to suck it up and start playing before committing to a refund. And WOW...THIS GAME. While the amount of things going on during combat is initially a bit overwhelming, it reminds me so much of Devil May Cry 3 for those of you who played that. But with all the extra RPG and character building elements of a more fleshed out rpg.

This game is amazing, I made it through the tutorial, and them back down to Earth, and into the first really open area. I'm blow away by the environment, and the gameplay, and yes, the soundtrack is quite nice. Other than the letterbox issue, my only other complaint so far is the default 2b outfit. Laugh if you want, I don't enjoy sexualization of game characters in situations where it doesn't make any logical sense in universe. I think both men and women would benefit a lot if we got away from that sort of thing in our media. Will probably look into a modded outfit more similar to like the Mass Effect N7 Catsuit mod or maybe there's something akin to the Soldier outfit?

Otherwise? Wow, what an amazing game and I wish I had just bought it ages ago.

the letterboxes are just a design choice.

same for the outfits, you can come up with a "its scifi" lore explanation if you want, but at the end of the day the lead designer just straight up says he likes pretty girls. you can get various alternative outfits throughout the game.

otherwise yes great game hope you have a good time.
