Cause you need to use the keyboard to input the name for the save file.
Even on console, this game does not feature an in-game keyboard, so it invokes the system one, and on PC that equals using your PC keyboard.

For normal difficulty you can totally use KB and mouse. I find aiming the pod with the mouse superior to controller.

But on hard controller overall is better.

Xbox controller is natively supported. However, you can use any controller if you enable Steam input. I uploaded a configuration where you can use the Trackpad on DS4/Dualsense controller to toggle the light and pet pod. I felt that keyboard and Mouse feels more fun in aiming, but the stuuuuuuuuuupid inclusion of "double tap direction to dodge" ruins the entire flow of combat and you cant even change it. Literally ruins the whole purpose of fast dodging. So yea, controller is the way to go.
