But if you kill them in a certain part of the game, it will effect your ending.
So if it makes no difference I'll just obliterate all machines on route B, then protect them on route C.
which ones are you talking about though? the ones that don't attack as soon as you leave the bunker or the village of machines?
the peaceful village is more tied to the regular plot (endings A, B and C) so the story will play out normally if you don't kill them, they're also friends of the resistance camp and have side quests of their own as well as the regular shops
the ones that just space out after leaving the bunker you can kill as many of them as you want, they'll drop currency and occasionally raw materials and will never attack first. after some point early in the plot though all these roaming machines become hostile
I don't think he was talking about those. I just played early story and remember somebody saying they don't attack first but are increasing in number. I'm pretty certain their early behavior is to make the game easier for noobs.
Anyway, I tried attacking them on route B / 2nd playthrough.
Machines on the amusement park have no difference. They attack back when attacked and later respawn as machines on desert and outside camp area. So we can just kill them and it will remain as if they weren't attacked. There's even a new sidequest on route B to kill some of them, probably to stimulate to do so.
Machines on Pascal village don't attack back and still beg to not be killed and apologize just before dying. They respawn when we go a bit far and there's a side ending that requires slaying them all before any respawns. After the ending, loading back the save, they're all back alive, and I guess that even if the ending isn't reached they'll just respawn anyway.
For the friendly killing achievement to count, you need to kill those white ones.
Though you will really need to be killing and hitting everything in order to find that other achievement. And there are achievement for not killing a certain machine as well. So everyone above asking you to do that is telling you part of the truth, just not the whole truth.
For the ending N,R,Z, you need to kill the friendly ones in a certain area during a certain time period of the game. While there's a few other endings that are related on your decision in certain part of the story based on will you save them or not?
For the ending J, you can even get this ending by accident if you are happy triggered and killing every machine on sight. This ending also has a time limit on where and when it will be counted.
So the correct answer to the OP's question: Kill or no kill? is: Kill AND no kill.
