Camera controls with right stick on a controller
Heya everyone,

I've been playing NieR:Automata now for a couple of hours. I've tired it with keyboard and mouse and the controls seem to work just fine.

Then I tried to use a controller because I would prefer to use a controller to play this game, but I have a major issue. I can't seem to rotate and move the camera around with the right stick! I can move the camera in the map with the right stick and it works in other games. But just not in this game.

Anyone have suggestions on what I can do to get the right stick to control the camera in game?

For me, I had to configure the right joystick on steam for it to be mouse control and that seemed to work for me

Definitely check the steam controller settings. For me it defaulted to a very weird custom setup that wasn't allowing me to activate some controls. Just set it to mimic a standard X box controller and see if that fixes the issue.

Yep you both were correct. It had to do with the steam controller support. After just general ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around for a while I was able to get the camera control to work with the right stick.

I've got the same issue, using a PS5 controller through Steam controller.

Right Stick works fine in the top down shooter sections, but doesn't move the camera when on the ground. Mapping it to Joystick mouse does move the camera, but also causes a mouse cursor to fly across my screen.

Having so many issues playing this game I wonder if it's even worth the hassle.

if you use xbox controller that's how it is by default. i started the game using controller and didn't have to change anything.

but then again i don't use steam controller config for anything because i had problems with it before. i had changed something for one game and then when i had went back to play GTA V it was all messed up and had to re-install steam to get it back the way it was suppose to be so now i don't mess with it anymore.

I apologize for necro-ing this but I wanted to come in and give a bit of a more concrete explanation as to how I fixed this, as I came to this thread looking for an answer to the same issue, just in case anyone else stumbled here with the same issue.

So go to Nier Automata in Big Picture Mode for Steam, then hit 'Manage Game' and then 'Controller Configuration'. That should get you to the window where you'll see a picture of a controller and various settings for it. Go to the 'Joystick Move' window for the Right Stick and try 'Reset to Default'.

More specifically what was causing the issue, for me at least, was that the 'Output' setting was set to 'Relative Mouse Movement' and not 'Right Joystick'. Changing that setting fixed it right up for me, didn't even need to restart the game. If it already says 'Right Joystick', try changing it to 'Relative Mouse Movement' then backing out to save the settings, going back in and changing it back to 'Right Joystick'. Hopefully that helps anyone else who might find this thread.
