Does the game get better after 5 hours of playing?
I just made it past the alien space ship and so far I'm not really hooked. I've liked all PlatinumGames games so far, but this one isn't clicking. The combat feels button mashy without real combo's or strategy against specific enemies. The quests feel grindy like a MMORPG except the game is a singleplayer story. Enemies all seem bullet spongy and are usually 5-10 levels above my level and are a chore to defeat.
Are there any incredible weapons or moves coming up that will make the gameplay more interesting?

I asked a similar question not long ago. I'm glad I'm not the only one in which this game really isn't sitting well, considering the Genre/types of game's Platinum usually puts out.

Someone had mentioned this game is more or less story based, and you wouldn't really get any "Insane" combo's like Bayonetta, and DMC Games, which is a shame.

However, I did find if I used two light swords, rather than a heavy sword/spear, the combo's did tend to feel a bit better, and you're even able to throw in uppercut jumps and such by pressing Jump, and heavy attack one after the other.

I agree thus far enemies are too "Bullet Spongey" or at least where I am now. Granted the quest to take down the level 40 Master Bot on the building shouldn't be attempted at level 16 ish, that didn't stop me from cheesing him though. But after doing 1 dmg per hit now on him, and absolutely no skill involved at all, I really couldn't force myself to fight him until I get to a higher level.

I'm trying to push through this game same as you, but... I dunno, I feel like if I just wanna mash buttons, and turn my brain off combat wise, I'll just go back to Dynasty Warriors games, which is exactly what I'm doing now, until I get an urge to try and play Nier again.

It's a shame the game isn't really pulling me in, one day I'll find that urge though...

The other sad part is I heard the "True Ending" comes from beating the game 12 times each with a different character or something. So imagine trying to force yourself through multiple playthrough's.

No. From a gameplay perspective this is one of Platinum's weakest titles, it's all about the setting and music, if the story doesn't interest you so far...well, the story does get a whole lot more out there as things go on, but gameplaywise this is it.

That's not quite right. You play the game until you get the ending. Then you play the entire thing again as 9S, but you get different sidequests, and eventually the paths diverge as 2B and 9S get seperated, eventually you reach the same ending as the first one. The third run straight up continues from where the first two runs ended, with maybe one of the best delayed title drop opening credits sequences of all time. This path then leads you to the actual ending.

This is not a 100% hack-and-slash game like other Platinum titles. The best hack-and-slash action you can get here is in the Colosseum DLC.

You can do a lot of complicated and satisfying combos in this game, but you can finish the game without it. And there is a portion of the game that you'll be heavily handicapped about it.

This is more of a story driven game. About the endings, there are 5 main endings. You only need to play the game through the 3 routes. The first 2 are slightly similar while the third is completely different. The 4th ending comes from the picking a different choice in the final route. You'll have chapter select so you don't need to do the same thing over again. The fifth ending comes after the 4th one. Barely any effort at all.

I would agree with the others' assessments that the combat is weak for a Platinum game unfortunately. This is without a doubt one of my favorite games of theirs, so it's a shame that the combat is weaker. However, the story and encounters are exciting. A lot of thought provoking content and ideas. Fantastic as a whole. If the combat has been a deal breaker, it only gets marginally better from here. Excellent game in the end though.

Kinda late, better late than never, right?

This is story driven game, rest is just an addition
You need to play game twice, after second time, story progresses, and later You will need to do final fight from two persectives to get true ending

If it ain't for You, leave it. This is not some kind of high quality hack and smash game, it is "generic" action hack and slash with little bit of this and that thrown into it.

Nier Automata is about the journey/story and gameplay is just there as an addition

Thanks for the info guys.
So you need to play this game multiple times even tho it's a long grindy RPG with fetch quests? That makes no sense to me.
If the story is good, should I just drop the difficulty to Easy and only go for the main story?

Not really play multiple times, second playthrough is on other character and 100% of the game is not repeated, there are changes.

The story gets a lot better later on

Aight, I'm gonna give this another chance this weekend. Probably wont do all the side quests if it's just go here, kill robot, collect screws, come back.

Then you're gonna face the same issues that made you drop it the first time...you'll end up underleveled because side quest is how you get most of the exp to level up, and you won't understand much of the story since most of the backgroudnd information, lore, and world bulding that greatly help in properly understanding the main story is given exactly in side quest: some major plot points will seemingly feel out of nowhere without the information you obtain in some side quests.
Playing only through the main quests is pretty much the worst possible way to play the game, as i said the story will be harder to follow, and gameplay wise you'll end up where you started, underleveled facing sponge enemies that are 10 level(if not more) higher than you.

This game gets very good after the 2nd playtrough. Combat is not the best thing in this game.

Haha, I'm hearing so much praise for the story, guess I just have to keep going and hope it eventually clicks.

Just so you know, when we say second playthrough, it is NOT the same a second time. It is fundamentally very different, so don't worry about grinding through the game again. Don't let that scare you away.

That' s good to know, I thought people meant literally the same playthrough again, like NG+
