Combat is completely different and beautiful to execute. There is no mandatory combo system (although combos exist), hence shooting does not break a combo, there is no scoring system, different weapon types (swords and axes in particular) have different behavior and animations. Since the game continuously switches point of view, you will experience top-down and sidescrolling in addition to 3rd person hack and slash.
On top of that, there is another way of "combat" to be unlocked after 1/3 of the story It is actually a kind of top-down-shooter.

Personally, combat reminded me of Zelda OOT and MM, just faster and with shooting in parallel.

Nothing like Bayonetta, it's more of a hack n slash. Bayo is a character action, like Devil May Cry. To be honest, Automata's combat is rather shallow, although flashy.
Not even close to the depth of Bayo's combat.

No. Nier:Automata took the 'hack' part of the term 'hack-n-slash' way too literal.

Not on Hard, no.

Automata is too easy on Normal. Making good use of Pod programs and weapons MUCH less relevant. Hell, I beat the game on my first try on Normal using only the Gatling and the laser...

Astral Chain is made by Platinum and is very different from Bayonetta.
