How to pass Jackass's trial without taking damage?

It would go fine if it was only two enemies, but with three in such a closed space it's quite hard. Should I focus on dodging, overwhelm them with weapon attacks, or avoid them altogether and use pod gunfire?

Spam dodge, in this game You can easly spam it and avoid most attacks in game.
POD should always fire, and use special ability.

It can take few tries. Keep going.

I don't know what it is with this challenge, the first time I did it I lost many times. The second time, I beat all the challenges on the first try. You just need to learn, as dexter411 said, how to fire the pod while using the attacks and spamming dodge. If you don't use the controller, I highly recommend it, it makes this very easy.

Be sure your level matches that of the challenge. If you're still level 15 (when you're given the quest) you'll be fighting level 25 machines which can be really hard.

I finnished this challenge later in the games when my level was better.

When you have network enabled, you also can repair the android to help you during this fight

You can also use damage buff items. 15 seconds is enough to make machine soup when you know what you are doing
