Any games with similar combat mechanics?
Hey everybody,

Been playing this game a lot the past few weeks. I'm nowhere near complete but i wanted to just try out other games with similar combat mechanics. I've looked at a few, bought one that is a few years old and i was wondering if anyone can recommend any others.

The main things i like about the combat are these:
-active dodge system where the attack comes, you hit your dodge button and it makes you immune even though you are still in the attack area
-riposte or counterattack system when you do a dodge
-multiple attack types and animations
-combo system (though i dont want one that is too rigid or that is only based on combos)
-player has mostly melee with some ranged attacks

Some of the games i've looked at, tried out and ones that i dislike or am unsure of:
-have Black Desert Online (prefer sp games, but mp is ok too)
-have Blade and Soul
-have Blades of Time (main character talks a lot though)
-looked at Bayonetta (not a fan of her appearance with the small head, even if lots of people and even the creator say its fine and she is just really tall or whatever)
-looked at FF13 Lightning Returns
-dont like Metal Gear Rising Revengeance (not a fan of Raiden or male characters who share similar appearances)

With Bayonetta i might be able to look past her weird appearance if the combat is really good. FF13 i heard some stuff about the gameplay being limited to 13 days or something? or that certain events in game only occur at certain times irl? not really sure what to make of this game. But same thing...if the combat is really good i might overlook the other stuff.

Bayonnetta and Devil May Cry series should be fine for you
And maybe the Darksiders series (the third come in november)

But these are not "open world" like Nier automata

If you think about it, the bare bones of the combat mechanics is dodging telegraphed enemy attacks using i-frames, and using openings to attack with your light and heavy attacks.

What is the thing that invented this? Yes, Dark (Demon's) Souls, Bloodborne etc. And soon Sekiro.

Yes the game gives you a 13 day timer, which can be made into a nonissue with ingame abilities and you can finish everything the game has to offer in that timespan if you know what you're doing. There are a lot of quests and events that only active at certain times during the day, and only on specific days in some cases, even bosses power up the longer you ignore them to a certain extent. The gameplay is great though, it's not the same as NieR because it's still somewhat turn based with an ATP gauge, but it's smooth flowing nonetheless. If you haven't played the other 2 prequels you'll be lost, storywise, and if you don't like annoying characters that talk a lot you might not like the main side-character. Overall I enjoyed it.
You might want to look into FF15, Yakuza Kiwami, the Batman: Arkham series and Monster Hunter World as they contain most of what you're looking for.

I might give Bayonetta a closer look.

As far as the others go is Yakuza Kiwami the same series as the Yakuza 0 game that was released a few weeks ago on steam? i was hoping for a game with like swords and stuff, but unarmed might be cool too. Wanted to try out FF15 but it wouldnt install for some reason so i had to get a refund. Also tried out MHW but my PC is old (new 1060 gpu though) and i didnt like the load it was putting on my PC so i refunded it too.

ty for the info, and if anyone has any more suggestions keep it coming

Why the hell you hate Raiden? He is totally different from his MGS2 persona so if you dislike him because of that game you are a moron. Besides even being older it´s a better action game.

I already said why...its because i dont like the way he looks. I'm not going to play a game if i dislike its aesthetics, especially if its the main character that i'm going to be playing as.

Kiwami is the remake of Yakuza 1 and is the continuation of Yakuza 0. So i would suggest you start with 0 1st . While the game is mostly a brawler, one of the mains in 0 uses a bat and a knie in 2 of his fighting stances. Also both mains can pick up/use any weapons from the surroundings and buy weapons from shops to use in fights though they will have limited uses.

The yakuza series usually has a very good and serious main storyline with a lot of wacky and hilarious sidestories to be done in between story events. There are also a ton of minigames to be played in each games ranging from karaoke songs, bowling, darts, crane machine, real classic arcade games, catfights gambling and much more and usually varies with each games. These games usually also have their own sidestories to complete once you've played them enough or achieved certain conditions to unlock them.

Its usually encouraged to spend a lot of time in between story cutscenes/events to do the sidestories and side contents to power up the main characters so that you'll not be underpowered by the time you fihgt the final bosses in each installment.

Thats it i suppose, Hope that helps :).

Ty for the info Eleventh Doctor

I've had Yakuza 0 on my wishlist ever since it was announced on Steam but i've been hesitant to buy it. I liked the idea of a game with a bunch of side activities like the stuff you mentioned and i heard that Yak 0 has them too. Only reason i havent gotten it yet is because i dont like the Yakuza theme. But i might overlook that and give it a try. Since Kiwami isnt out yet i'll get Yakuza and play that until Kiwami is released.

thanks again =)
