The Drakengard games have been released here in the west - The Drakengard name is actually the western name. D1 and D2 on PS2, D3 on PS3. None of the other games as polished as this one mind.
I have played both the original NieR (Gestalt version) and Drakengard 3. The first NieR does feel very clunky in comparison to this one and there is a strong possibility you would be disappointed with it while playing it. The story however is top notch (if slightly daft) and there is plenty to still be surprised about. If you thought the music in Automata game was fantastic, the first game pretty much blows it out of the water.
I've not played D1 and D2, but Drakengard 3 is an interesting game indeed. It's definitely a low budget game, however if you perservere with it, it does get better, and I found the story rewarding although rather messed up
Drakengard 3 is by far my favorite of Taro's past work. Excellent story, great music but it was the characters that made me fall in love with that game. Each character's story and backstory was deep and if you kept digging, things got even more deeper. But as such with a Taro game, gameplay was ass. Very repetitive gameplay but excellent character story and music. The bad thing about Drakengard 3 was the DLC. It held soooo much backstory content behind DLC. This is content that should have been fleshed out into the main game.
Overall, don't go into Taro's past work expecting the best gameplay experience. Instead, go in with an open mind and try to fully experience the story, characters, and world building.
This, same reason why, even though Story Wise Witcher 1 and 2 are "great" the game itself is horrible, because of the controls, etc.
Games which actually aged well: Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask. It's Quest System was and still is, one of the better ones. Another reason why Ocarina of Time did not aged well, because it's lacking crucial elements, new games all have in common.
In terms of story, I would have a hard time picking between it and Automata. I may give it to OG NieR solely because its story is just so interesting and original, even moreso than Automata's. Although I do like the execution of the story and characters more in Automata.
Either way, they're both 10/10 in the story/character department to me.
