This game actually got me into looking at hack & slashers, coming from fps and tps games which I preferably played with m&kb. Controls are direct and precise, there is no mandatory combo system, every strike that hits counts. There are some hidden techniques which are not essential for finishing but useful for completing the game, which isn't that difficult. A controller is highly recommended, though. There is no auto save option except for boss fights, you have to take care of saving yourself. To addsome variety, a major change in combat occurs at about 1/3 of the story.
The story isn't your generic shallow entertainment happy ending one but instead a rollercoaster of emotions. There are happy moments on the one hand, sure, but on the other hand the Honest Game Trailer by Smosh doesn't lie about the game trying to turn you into a nihilist. In addition, you have 26 different endings (plus another one in DLC) which are easily to be achieved. Total playtime ranges from 30 to 50 hours, depending on your urge to complete every task.
Difficulty ranges from "I-CAN-TYPING" to "Let's beat Dark Souls II with a deprived character", four levels are available with the second easiest "Normal" being a very accessible one if you have ever played a game with a controller before. Beware, though, that many new players struggle with the game's tutorial section which stretches between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your ability to grasp concepts. Since there is no auto saving, a death at the end of the tutorial means that you have to play it all over again. But as a former newbie to this genre I can confirm that it is possible to one-shot this section on Normal difficulty without any hassle, just keep your eyes peeled.
Just watch others' gameplay videos and you should have a good understanding.
If you think about hack and slash games like Dark Souls or Shadow of Mordor, Automata is nothing like them. If you have troubles there's Easy mode where you can have multiple things to make combat easier. it's almost like you don't have to do anything when in combat because chips allow you to not worry about it. But don't try it in Hard the first time you play it. I tried and it didn't end up in my favor.
and both gameplay and story 10/10. Like gameplay is so smooth press whatever and you can always execute it, unless you're taking damage. But seriously. and both casual and hardcore.
It´s definitedly worth it on gameplay merits alone.
Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is perfect. I love it. But I also like action games. Imo it takes a lot to make it through the story if you're not into that.

If you don't like that as well you should really give this game a pass.
