years later and my problem persist
I love this game. I love the characters, I like most endings. the gameplay is solid, the newbies cry a lot and it's an all around great game.

however there is ONE thing that really pisses me off to no end.

you all know that you can retrieve your own dead body and the chips. same was as dark souls lets you take back your souls our blood or whatever on the spot you so stupidly died.

see, my issue is that when I die, I can only retrieve my body WHEN NOTHING'S ON IT. I mean it. when I first die, I try to find my body. it's nowhere to be found. I look at every pixel in a whole kilometer radius of the spot I died and then again around the spot the ICON says I died. nothing. Absolutely NO body what so ever. not even a poor player from the other side of the planet.
Then I stupidly die because i'm raging about not finding my body and an enemy blast me to smithereens.

...then, magically, I find my body. the one from the second death. the one that is literaly empty. and I don't even have to try: it's literaly floating a meter off the ground and shining like a beacon in a dark night. sometime to the point I can see it from beyond my graphic capabilities. it's so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid.

so.. after over 70h of this kind of BS happening to me,and my previous post being completely swamped by trolls and forgotten to time. I decide to run a stupid little test

I confirm: on both my computers, even after YEARS, whenever I equip something other than the basics, my body DOES NOT stay. It is impossible to find it.
But when I only equip the basic stuff the game starts you with, my body is impossible to ignore.

how do I know? well for one I let myself die literaly right next to the resistance village, in the small area with water and three enemies. you know, two step after exiting the resistance village. it cost me a lot of chips to do this over 20 times but now I am certain of it. I can not find my own body if it has anything equipped that is not default. excluding pod's stuff.
I literaly wasted an hour and a half of my free time just for that and confirming it pisses me off even more. if this was a random occurence, yeah sure, i'd let it slide. but since i've confirmed a few month after purchasing this game back when it came and and tonight, well.... yeah there's a problem.

TLDR: dying makes my body impossible to find. but can find it only when nothing is equipped making the feature useless.

Only thing you find on bodies are temporary buffs (dependent on chips equipped of the player whose body you find) and you get healing and maybe an ally or enemy. There is no reason to even care where you died in-game or for that matter, to pick up bodies if you are really high level, since that's actually *kinda* dangerous.

So yeah, you just discovered how the death upload thing works. It obviously doesn't upload your body if you got nothing equipped. But it always will upload it if you have something equipped, and you can NEVER find your own body unless it has not been uploaded. Meaning if you got chips equipped the body is uploaded, and YOU can not find it. Other players can, and even they only get temporary buffs (And healing) of your body.

I guess you never noticed you actually LOSE all chips equipped when you die. you can recover them (and they reequip automatically) by going up to your own body and activating it.
it will be the same as going up to a game-made body (identified by having no name and no skill granted as buff) that only serve to heal you when you're playing easy or normal difficulty at some area like right before dropping down in the amusement park to fight the first boss, the operetta thing.

With your network activated or deactivated this will always happen.

Why else would a body wear YOUR EXACT NAME and the system message state "recovered body. All chips." and suddenly your shockwave 6 works again and permanently... or well.. until you die again.

From your post, I can only gather you play on easy difficulty where it's almost impossible to actually die and all the auto-skills are put in place even on new bodies. That's the only way you'd never notice this when it happened.

just to add a thing... the game literaly tells you you can do this by giving you a sub-quest to go fetch your lost equippment and be literaly spammed by a text log of everything you still had on you at the end of the pseudo-tutorial run of the factory.
also the loading screen after dying tells you so.

Are ya using FAR? If so then don't use the framerate unlocker.

If you die before you recover your old body, all your equipped chips will be gone.

As far as I know, the game doesn't automatically saves when you die in combat. You can reload your last save file with your equipment still intact. You will lose some game progress, but at least you still have your chips. I've tried it once before. But you should test that before trying. There are 3 saves slot for a reason.

Sometimes your previous body won't be placed on the exact location where you died. There are times when your old body will be placed on a supposedly more accessible location (away from mobs or away from the pistons in the abandoned factory). It is a bit confusing tbh. Maybe, just maybe, you weren't looking at the right spot.

And lastly do not use framerate unlocker of FAR, if you use FAR. Wierd stuff happens when that thing is on. Or maybe downgrade your version of FAR. Some people (including me) experienced some issues with the latest version.

I don't use what I don't need. I personnaly can't see more than 45-50 fps as I have not trained my eyes with extensive gaming. My screen is 59Hz so there is even less point in getting more than 60 fps. I don't exactly see the link between FAR and the basic game functions.
I am perfectly content with the game's graphics.

I know, I also stated this in my first post.

I know the game doesn't auto-save and that is why I don't exactly press the issue. it's been a bit over two years already.

I know my body don't exactly fall at the exact pixel I saw myself die. which is why I stated in my first post that I looked everywhere within a kilometer radius. If you don't know what a kilometer refers to, it's about 0,6 miles give or take. which means I looked at almost the whole city area, over and under. I went and died at the same place, on a roof. by the same enemy, flying X-naut thing that spins to win. Like I said in my original post, my second body was there, no problem. So I went right in front of the resistance village to test if this was a problem and yes, it is a problem. I died a dozen of time at the same place against the same enemies but everytime I had my chips equipped my body was nowhere to be found. When I died without any chips equipped I could always retrieve my body where it was supposed to be and recover it. Even if it says "all chips" in the screenshot I didn't have any to actually recover.

It doesn't auto-save, but it is still infuriating at times. The game provides me with a basic reliquary system and I am unable to make use of it.And I always try to recover my body in hopes of the function could be working this time.

When I die (Admittedly that ain't happening at lvl 88 unless I stand around AFK in a group of enemies for 2 minutes) I get literally 2 options
Load Save
Quit to Title

So retrieving bodies was never an issue for me /hah

wrong game. unless it's an Ending with the credits rolling you don't get a menu saying load/quit. you respawn immediatly in your last save-cabin.

Actually, it depends where you are in the game's storyline.

If you are playing a chapter after the bunker has been destroyed what eRe4s3r is correct for obvious reasons.

Otherwise, you have to collect your body

Yeah that was it. Had to try on a newer save. And.. it works for me? No idea what to tell you OP. Could find my body (at level 5) and retrieve my chips just fine and it was kinda where I died too.

I played so much beyond that plot point that I forgot this entire mechanic existed. (Which is a thing if you go for 100% completion I guess)

Yeah, my first playthrough of the game I died a lot, and I was used to having to try and collect my body (I probably lost all chips a more than a few times from not collecting the body), so the first time I died after that point in the story, I just ended up staring at the screen as I couldn't figure out what was going on.

right, there's that thing happening. Fair enough, even I had trouble dying after the bunker event. what's with anti chain damage and auto heal chips. I guess I jumped to conclusion myself there sorry about that.

Like I said, I can find my body (also shown in the screenshot from earlier) but it only let me find it when I had nothing equipped. As soon as any non-default chips are on, my body is nowhere to be found.

Since I do not know the cause and I can always restart from an actual save without loosing much, there doesn't seem to be much to do by anyone. and it's annoying .
I think there are some places where, if you die, and go back, the geography or layout of area possibly messes up where your body actually is is - perhaps clipping or something causes it to be located under some scenery and therefore inaccessible. There have been times I've given up searching for my body at some points (the room where you first fight Adam for example is one)
