NIER (Gestalt or Replicant)
After completing NieR:Automata and loving it, lots of questions came to my mind, unfortunately i didn't know, most of them are more related to the title titles "NIER (Gestalt or Replicant)" and i could see only were for consoles. I was wondering if u know if any of those mentioned are coming to PC?

Those are two versions of the same game and both are basically a stone age Automata. Worse combat, controls, pace and IMHO story.

I don't think those niche games are coming even to PS4 and much less to PC.

I'll agree with this. It's a decent game in my opinion, but definitely nowhere near as good as Automata.

I just finished the game yesterday and a few things I can say about it are:
  • The story is good, even if not as good as Automata in that regard.
  • English VA is pretty good(Liam O'Brien and Laura Bailey do great here).
  • The combat is a bit bland, but is made extremely annoying by the fact that almost every attack made against you will send you flying and knock you down.
  • There are four endings: A, B, C, and D. B is a retread of the second part of the game, but with some extra story story bits in it(much like in Automata) that make you feel bad for the bosses you face, and this is fine. D and C, however, have you play through the exact same route as B, but without any differences except having an extra boss at the end and one of two unsatisfying endings. Going through the second half of the game a third time wasn't really all that fun, and really wasn't worth it in my opinion.

Again, it's a decent game, but I can definitely see why it didn't do too well. However, it might be nice to have it ported(or better, remade with improved combat and most of route C/D cut out) on PC so that more people could have the option of playing it.

Mmm I see, thanks for your opinions, I've watched some gameplays and yeah looks a bit "rustic". I was more concerned about the plot actually, like who were better Devola, Popola, Emil, etc. Anyway thanks for the advice.

The story is by far better and more emotional imo.
To OP i recommend playing it because it's a great game and the gameplay may not be as good as in Automata but for me it didn't get boring because killing enemies felt satisfying because of the ridicolous amount of blood that would spill out after smashing them, it just doesn't feature much combos or stuff and the side quests are badly designed so just do the necessary ones if you want to get all endings. If you even want to play it... but it's certainly a very good game and the great soundtrack really helps the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqXPW0oBKgg
But if you have a console just give it a try.

Also it's by far not as bad as the Drakengard games which I still love for the story but the gameplay is really horrible.

If you really want to understand Nier, I would recommend watching a good youtube named Clemps. He even explains how Drakengard is connected to Nier in the first place. Better than playing a rough game for 8-10 hours.

You should definitely play it and watch him, there was a lot of stuff that's explained through other sorts of content like the Yorha theatre plays which explains what happens before Nier Automata.

Actually I do want, I've been looking for in earth and sky but damn I can't find it for my PS3 (where I live). And I've been trying to use the RPCS3 emulator but the game have some issues with the sound and the sync with FPS. Also I wouldn't like to try it so much cos' after all this kind of games I feel bad of piracy,

They're probably not coming to PC anytime soon, they sold poorly and are really clunky.

Replicant and Gestalt are the same game, just named different between the Japanese and Western versions, with Nier's model and age being different. He's a younger teen and is with his sister in the Japanese Replicant version. He's much older and is the father of the second protagonist instead in Gestalt. The story barely changes.

Also Drakengard ties into NieR as well, as that's technically where White Chlorination Syndrome came from, which is what leads into NieR: Replicant/Gestalt, and setup the world for Automata.

Personally, I think Replicant/Gestalt is great but has a lot of flaws, there's a lot of BS moments and the controls are all over the place. The Story is really what holds it together in my opinion. Drakengard further amplifies those issues depending on which game you're playing, as the earlier Drakengard games I find horrible to play and the story isn't that interesting to me either. Just so happens one of the many endings results in the NieR world happening... but the other endings are totally unrelated.

Drakengard games are also ridiculously hard at times, almost like playing an extended Mario Party 64 minigame during some segments. If you don't give out just on the difficulty alone, your hands probably will a few times.

I agree wholeheartedly about the knock backs on every hit, also there is no fast travel anywhere or a way to sprint made the backtracking a bit annoying. Then there's the fishing side quests which if you finish has a very unsatisfying (imo) ending to it, the old lady and weiss quest stands out as particularly memorable and overall the places are vibrant and unique enough especially for the hardware I played it on.

There's also a big part in Popola and Devola and if you're very dedicated you can have them sing a custom duet at some point in the story which is very memorable since they're the biggest non playable characters I associate with Nier.

Actual story in Nier is better for me personally, there's a driving force behind wanting to protect Yona (daughter of protagonist) and if you like the main character at all you really get kinda attached to it, the plot does a fantastic job of keeping you in the dark too and the enemies are interesting to say the least.

Of course I can't talk about Nier without mentioning Kaine and Emil, they're fragile and strong and they support you, they talk with and about their faults and they are just as uneasy as you, they have frequent chats all the time and personally I don't even like being in combat with subtitles in case I miss something funny (they don't repeat chats, I think).

Truthfully I don't know anything about the origins of Nier but the experience of playing it and the fantasy setting it gives you after the tutorial really makes you want to get out into the barren world and see what is left of humanity, you actually want to run back from that village 5 minutes away to your village just so you can see what's going on.

Lastly I find the combat to be very much fun, it has some heft to it after you cross a sort of half way point in the story and be warned... any completionists reading this if you have gotten past where the main character changes his appearance and weapons with unfinished side quests, you're going to be missing the % on those as they can't be resumed for that playthrough.

Forgot completely about Weiss, he is by far and away the best voice and character in the game.. just hearing him ramble on about anything makes me sit back and get ready to laugh. He and the hussy have a very funny back and forth dialogue and speaking of that... well I'll just say the intro of the main game is very memorable and I can't help but have every word committed to memory, it is a bit embarassing if showing a friend as the game loads through and then there's suddenly shouting from the tv haha.

Overall yeah I'm happy to recommend it, the combat is dated and the cast is small. Side quests are nothing revolutionary and fishing is hit or miss whether you'd like it, if you're going for 100% you might find yourself frustrated with a certain fragile item quest or the issue I highlighted earlier, other than that damn fine game with a good amount of content.

They're more cameos than actual characters in Automata, but Emil is definitely one of my favorite characters from any game.

All of OG Nier's major characters are amazing though.

After reading this there is no need to hesitate rather of playing or not to play this game. Definitely I'll have to, seriously, thank you very much.

After seeing this post I installed a ps3 emulator and downloaded the game (I have the disc and have finished the game before) and it's running very well. Even the 60fps patch works.

I purchased a copy on eBay for around $25.

Honestly, the game is extremely dated...but if you want to further understand Automata, the original Nier has plenty of callbacks that add to the story (and is an amazing story in it's own right). Also, though it's technically a prequel, it's considered a stand-alone story by Yoko Taro.

Like Automata, the format of combat is bizarre, and can go from hack-n-slash to "Diablo 3" to reading an interactive novella. It's enjoyably unique in it's own way....granted you can tolerate the dated combat.

All-in-all, the story shouldn't take you more than 25-30 hours. Hopefully, you choose to play it.
