NieR:Automata™
Just how bad is the gameplay on the prior Yoko Taro games?
Thinking about picking some of them up... but on the otherhand I've heard a ton about how rough they are and yada yada. So, anyone with firsthand experience got any input?

I've only played the original Nier, outside of Automata. And the gameplay is...okay. I wasn't really a big fan of the combat. But the story, music and characters are just as wonderful as they are in Automata. Some might even say they're better. :steamhappy: For me, the gameplay was just something I was willing to put up with to continue the fantastic story. But your mileage may vary.
Thanks for the responses.

TW3 has gameplay? Spent most the game holding the spin to win button and talking to people in game. lol
don´t forget Quen spam lelz (bu seriously, in harder difficulties Quen alone is not enough)
I personally enjoy the dynasty warriors style of combat in drakengard 3, didnt care much for the combat in og nier however. The characters and story in og nier were good, I didnt personally care for the characters in og nier but to each their own. Automata is just simply amazing imo. The combat in automata is not as in depth as bayonetta or MGR:R but its still pretty verbose and in depth but the characters and story is what sold me on automata, much more so than og nier, but thats just me. Some people like og nier more than automata, and some people (like myself) prefer automata over og nier, it just depends on how well the characters and stories stick with you afterwards. That might be one of the beauties of yoko taro's works, is that no matter who you ask, lots of fans prefer a different game of his for different reasons. There is not 1 set reason why someone likes automata, dod 1, dod3, or og nier the best, its just a culmination of amazing characters, story, music, and philosophy.

The original NieR is still nice to play, although all the gameplay elements are less refined than they are in Automata, expect a similar blend of genres, and music and story that is just as high quality as Automata.

Drakengard is pretty straight up hack 'n' slash. Drakengard 3's combo system is pretty fun and Zero is a great main character, but the framerate in that game fluctuates between 5fps - 30fps, making it painful to wade through in parts. It does throw a crazy genre shift at you for the final boss though (similar to the original Drakengard), which is one of the most artistic moments in gaming in my opinion.

I'd say all of Taro's games are worth experiencing in one way or another for the unusual atmosphere and feelings they generate, despite their flaws.

Thanks all for the responses, decided to pick up Nier (1) and Drakengard 3 since I found em at a good price.

Nier and TW3 are completely different types of games; it's the proverbial apples to oranges. What's next? Are you going to be comparing Street Fighter to Red Dead Redemption? Baldur's Gate to Bayonetta? Come on, man.
