His namesake really has no bearing on this game except to tell you that it's from the same series.

Just wanted to reiterate this.
NieR:Automata is called a NieR game because it very much is a continuation of NieR. Same world, even some of the same characters show up, just not NieR himself. There's a lot of lore connecting the two games. Automata is the long term result of what happens in NieR.
Most of the people not seeing the connection also likely never played the original NieR or heard of it. It was extremely niche and sold poorly everywhere. It's a miracle that NieR:Automata gathered so much attention, and it most likely got most of it's attention because of the controversy news outlets started when they became upset about 2B's Butt being partially visible sometimes. Which I find just sad, but at least the game is doing well.
The Name NieR is the name of the main character in " NieR: RepliCant & Gestalt " also known as NIER outside of Japan, the game had two Versions: "Gastalt" on the Xbox 360 and that is the version most people played, and RepliCant which is a japan only PS3 version (which is the correct version leading up to Automata after Ending E). NieR RepliCant & Gestalt is a continuation of the 5th Ending of the Game Drakengard (Drag-on Dragoon in japan).
The reason the game is called NieR is Because at the End of RepliCant, NieR Doomed the Human Race by destroying the project that was ment to save them from the illnesses and Death caused by Drakengard's ending, stated by yoko taro " NieR is a curse ", that takes the effect upon the world caused by the actions of NieR himself.
However, Yoko Taro has stated that the word Nier means a "Curse" (As translated here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/168677-nier-automata/73927297), and Automata is derived from Automatons, therefore NieR: Automata could be translated to Curse of the Automatons.
Clearly a brand name thing.
