Best Steam Controller configuration?
Hey, so I just picked up the game and uh, I keep dying in the intro because of wonky controls, mostly due to the right touchpad being either too sensitive, or not quite sensitive enough. I'm starting to think that I need to try a different configuration altogether. Does anyone have a good config to suggest? And suggested ingame camera config as well? Thanks!

I think 3rd person action games are really the worst fit for the steam controller.

*sigh*. Should I just grab my PS4 controller and call it a day?

As I recall, the basic 'Gamepad' setting is basically a button for button copy of the 360 controller. Really no way to fix how weird the touchpad is, though.

I mapped one of the grip buttons to switch the touchpad to joystick move whenever one of the shmups sections comes up with it being a mouse joystick by default. I also bumped up the horizontal sensitivity ingame. Other than that, its just the Gamepad layout for me.

Thats how I did it too: mouse-joystick by default, tapping the left grip once switches the pad to joystick move, tapping it again switches back to mouse-joystick.

Holding the left bumper constantlyfor scanning was annoying, so I made double-tapping the bumper toggling the scanner on and off (take care: if the wrnog pod is selected ...,).
Here's how I have it set:

Right touch pad is joystick camera, but switches to joystick move while holding right bumper. Also while holding right bumper, clicking turns into light attack.

Gyro is mouse joystick and activates while holding right bumper as well.

Right grip is jump.

Left grip is pod switch.

Thanks to this set up, using any other controller makes me feel like I'm handicapping myself.

I completely disagree. The steam controller is incredibly versatile and can handle nearly everything you can throw at it if you know how to customize it.

The only games it struggles with are games that require precise d-pad presses.

Don't get me wrong, I love it as well. But for this I used my xone pad

I've been using my DS4 with no problems, but might have to return to the SC check out the gyro control shooting method Gency mentioned.

First and foremost, set the right touch pad to mouse-like joystick. Turn off the trackball mode as well. Also set edge spin speed to max so when looking around, you can just move your finger over the touchpad and when it reaches the edge, it will keep moving the camera to wherever you were moving. This helps with rotating the camera to where you want in a single swipe.

The rest of the buttons can be left as is for an xbox 360 pad. You CAN cheat a little and set the grip buttons to make your pod fire without having to hold the button all the time. Just set that button to the pod fire button and in it's options, set "toggle" to on. In practice, when you use the pod fire through this button, press it once to start firing, press again to stop firing. The same can be done with the other grip button for the pod programs. This works wonders for the scanner program, but is good for when you want to use the triple pod charge attack on other programs.

EDIT: Oh, also, in the default setting, the triggers are set to be used on full push (where it clicks). But I prefer to use the trigger on soft press. It's a preference, but soft press sends the input a lot faster than full click because you don't have to fully press the trigger to activate it.

I love my Steam Controller. It has spoiled me. I can't use other controllers anymore because they just feel "wrong'.

For the game, I've remapped a lot of my button. I have right touch pad set to joystick camera. Because of this, I struggle at the hacking games. So I'm thinking of implementing grip buttons as a toggle for joystick move for the hacking portions.

I haven't tried the gyro yet. Will likely enable it with weekend and test it out for pod shooting and hacking movement.

Last time I tried gyro on forgot-which-game, the thing kept moving the camera to look upwards, and nothing I did could change it. So gyro is the only input I'm not using for now. But yeah, other than 2D fighting games, this controller has replaced everything else for me.

I use a double pad setup...
Left pad control the movement combined left pad click as the "Dpad" and allow to use item change pod during fight by clicking on the pad.

Right pad was tricky to setup because it need to work with the camera and also the "hacking game"

I use the "mouse like joystick" at low friction with an outer ring to control during "hacking mini game". The outer ring speed is about at 75% and and i made the ring ticker than the default setting.

The pad also do the X Y A B button when clicked. Using a Dpad option not the button option. The Dpad setting allow to keep the button control more in the middle of the pad. It is compatible with using the outer ring to control the hacking mini game.

So this way I can control the camera while fighting.

Last I added a toggle button for the pod because I was tiered to hold it.

Note that this setting require .. some kind of training. That I personally done last year by playing RWBY Grimm eclipse with virtually the same controller option.

Once learned it's extremely efficient in many games as it allow to control everything all the time without moving our thumbs outside of the aptic pad. When I go back to a common controller I find it pretty annoying to move from the buttons to the stick to control stuffs...

Even if you're using DS4, I recomend the gyro. My only issue with that controller in this game is the lack of grip buttons, though when I was forced to swtich to that controller, I found the dual stage triggers helped make up for some of the limitaions.

That sounds like an issue with your specific controller. Maybe contact support about it.

I found it to be a few frames difference, though I can press it fast enough to use the hair trigger agressive option.
