Why is Jean Claude's name censored?
This was really weird to me. When you are doing the side quest for that cult leader machine named Jean Claude, every time he is referred to by name in spoken dialogue his name is bleeped out.

Is this a joke that went over my head? A reference to a pervious game? Extremely specific and absurd censorship?

I believe they're saying his true name in the voice acting but due to copyrights they had to bleep it out. Not 100% sure if thats really the case so take this with pinch of salt.
From an on-the-works wiki:
In Western releases, Sartre is referred to by the name "Jean-Paul"
Sartre is most likely a reference to the real-life 20th century French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, who is famous as one of the key figures in the philosophy of existentialism.
Whenever 9s refers back to him(with voice acting) by his name, a bleep sound comes out instead.
If Square was able to censor a simple body, imagine the rest ...

In the Japanese version, his name is Sartre. In the japanese version of the game, the english audio uses that name, but it had to be changed in the english version due to copyright. Instead of calling the voice actors back for two not very important lines, they bleeped it out.
The producer of Nier Automata really and unfortunately underestimated her audience, treated it as childish, as a 'nothing'. Nier Automata needs to get out of adolescence and grow as a game!

At least they didn't cut the quest line...

Also now realizing that I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up the name. Clearly I was thinking about Jean Claude Van Damme.

kek. This made me chuckle. Though yeah, that guy can also talk about existentialism, and about his mind being like a.... cloud or something. <.<
Welcome in the world where even size of mobile phone can be claimed -_-

... do not underestimate the mass media! We talk here about one.
... and all the aspects that involve this, this means of communicating something via game (say, a more interactive TV).

We talk here about something important, about censorship!
"Yoko Taro mentioned at PAX that a character's name got changed in the English version due to copyright. I imagine this is probably the one."
Does anyone have a source on this supposed copyright reasoning? Smells like BS to me, you can't copyright a person's name.
