And by that I mean, there are five main endings, not counting the mini-endings you get for messing up.

To be honest. You could also end Nier: Gestalt in 3 playthroughs but to see all of the endings you have to repeat few things.

You're really not playing through the game 3 times. It's different each time, although to be fair the first two times are similar but there are a lot of new plot twists and content to set it apart. I don't think it is accurate to say you are playing through the game multiple times as that implies you are just experiencing the exact same content multiple times.

There's actually 21 bad endings but those don't require a whole new game so long as you save often

Trust us, the minimum is 3. Chapter Select unlocks after the end of Route C, which allows you to replay the final battle for Ending C/D (whichever you missed), and Ending E triggers automatically should you allow it.
