External GPU for low-end laptops?
Do any of you guys know anything about external graphics cards, or eGPU as they call it? It might be the workaround for anyone wants to keep their old laptops or can't afford an expensive gaming rig(or don't know how to build a rig or don't want to), and since we don't know for sure Nier: Automata's specs are really final, it's better to be prepare with another alternative.

Been researching somewhat, and find some examples:

Look, I know it'll be preferable to build a gaming desktop or get a new gaming laptop, but there are those who don't want to get rid of their trusty workhorse laptops just for a single game. Yes, Nier Automata looks amazing and all, but it's still one game. Just a suggestion. Don't get worked up. I know some of you do.

Alienware PC provides device for using external GPU. But WTF, the price of getting one such thing is almost the same as buying a PS4 pro!

Ouch. Yeah. That and Razer. Kinda thinking I might go DIY if the ready-made ones are too much for me price-wise.

You should just put money away for a new PC. I used Laptops for years and got to a point where the cost to repair them was no different to buying a PC so I went for a PC.

Well worth it in the long run.

Nothing quite like that moment when you play a game on max settings with stable framerates for the first time ever.

Personally I don't think it's feasible for either an old or low spec laptop.
An old laptop won't have Thunderbolt 3.0 and low spec laptop won't have the CPU horsepower to run the eGPU to its full potential.

The only use case i can see is to use an eGPU to make your beastly gaming laptop even more beastly when you are at home.

Don't do it. I bought an eGPU for my laptop about 3 years ago. The first year was awesome, my fairly cheap Lenovo laptop was like a Ferrari in the lastest games. But now my system is just totally bottle-necked and it's impossible to upgrade my laptop's memory or CPU any further. Also, I have pretty much the largest graphics card that will fit in my particular eGPU so there really isn't much ability for me to upgrade the GPU either.

Wish I had just held off for a full size PC that could have been more easily upgraded.

Will that serve me well? I hope so.

I'm curious, though: isn't eGPUs still new, though? Maybe it'll get better in the future?

Sorry if I sound a little stubborn, but my laptop is still in great shape. It's just that my Nvidia GeForce 610M is kinda low .Getting rid of it for a new rig just to play one high-end game is a little too much for me.

But I guess I'll just keep NIer:A in my library for who knows how long till I have enough $$$ for a new rig.

Sorry for your Lenovo though XD.

I was wondering the same thing when i still was on a laptop but I think it is not that worth.
I suggest you building a new rig if you got some money to throw.
With the upgrade, you will make a better investement.
Scuse me. I'm thinking to get Nier Automata but I don't think I can run on my PC, and I won't be able to afford a gaming laptop for the forseeable future. Someone please help me.
Here are my system specs:
Intel Core i7-4510U 2 core 2.0ghz
8 gb RAM
AMD Radeon R5 m230
