How much damage do crits actually do in NieR automata?

Ancient Overlord +4 with even just a Critical +4 chip is netting me pretty frequent 4k+ damage crits at level 60.

I am not sure myself how it works but I think it only works with weapons with crit trait. Do not quote me on that. Unless I am blind, which I very welll could be, I haven't noticed noticable chunks of enemy hp fall away with a weapon without the trait.
