Nothing Unusual is a light backpack-building arena survival roguelike. The city’s gone weird; monsters are crawling out of the cracks. Fight with sticks, thermoses, umbrellas and odder things: arrange, merge and mix elements in your backpack, and last until dark. After all, monsters need sleep too.

October 30 Update: Co-op Stability and Control Fixes

1:33am

Today's fixes focus on reconnecting, saving results, and passing items between teammates, along with controller and backpack controls.

Co-op and saves

• Fixed cases where movement, player slots, or saved progress were restored incorrectly after reconnecting.
• Improved result recovery and saving after victory when players disconnect or reconnect.
• If the next wave fails to start, players now stay in the backpack screen instead of entering an incomplete battle.
• Fixed item-transfer acknowledgements and save synchronization when a teammate disconnects during a handoff.
• A teammate joining or reconnecting no longer rebuilds battle objects for everyone already connected, reducing duplicated effects and state issues.

Combat feedback

• Fixed abnormal stun, downed, and maraca speed-boost timers during brief network interruptions.
• Fixed revived teammates continuing movement commands left over from before they were downed.
• Restored ice-skate trails and charging states for pets, snowmen, and dolls after reconnecting.
• Added missing stat-fragment pickup effects and some beat, bone-flute, and match-related sounds in co-op.

Controls

• Switching away from the game stops your character while keeping the laser pointer's target lock.
• Unplugging the active controller switches back to mouse controls, including when it is unplugged while the game is out of focus.
• Opening Settings while dragging an item returns it to its original slot, preventing drag and cursor issues.

If you run into a problem, please send a report through the in-game bug feedback tool. Details about what happened and whether you were playing co-op help me track it down.

October 29 Update: Co-op Fixes and Quality-of-Life Improvements

Oct 29

Hi everyone! Today's update fixes several co-op issues and improves save confirmations, gameplay tips, and the interface.

Online co-op

Fixed an issue where disconnecting while the backpack was loading would send you straight back to the main menu.
Fixed an issue where a client could enter combat too early during reconnection.
If starting a co-op run fails, the room now returns to the lobby with a message so you can try again.
Fixed an issue where a client's character could keep moving after opening Settings.
Fixed the lizard's laser and the one-legged chicken's landing stomp failing to hit all players within their range. Standing together no longer lets a teammate absorb the hit detection for you!
Added the missing hands and weapons to locked character silhouettes in the co-op lobby.

Backpack and crafting

Fixed tape continuing to make items count as adjacent after it had already been consumed by an earlier craft. Once the tape is used up, it really is gone.

Controls and interface

When a save exists, selecting New Game now asks for confirmation to help prevent accidentally overwriting your current run.
Continue no longer appears on the main menu when there is no save.
Made the first-wave opening tip larger, moved it below the character, and increased how long it stays on screen.
Added starting coin amounts to the character selection screen.
Fixed button prompts failing to update after switching to a different brand of controller.
Fixed a cursor issue in the bug report screen and Chinese punctuation appearing at the start of a line.

Demo

Fixed Steam identifying the demo as the full game while it was running.

If you run into a problem, please let me know through the in-game bug report feature. A description of what happened, screenshots, and whether you were playing online will help me track it down.

Nothing Unusual launches on Steam on December 3, 2026. Available for Windows, with online co-op for up to 4 players.

Dev update: Four players against the horde

Oct 28

Hi, I’m SleepingMass. Lately, I’ve been working on online co-op and adding new achievements. Here’s a recent screenshot of four-player combat to show you how things are looking.

Four players, four backpack builds

Nothing Unusual supports online co-op for up to four players. Everyone has their own backpack and weapon build. You can check a teammate’s backpack and pass them items that fit their setup. If someone goes down in combat, stay close to revive them.

More players also mean more monsters with more health. Once the party is together, it’s time to take those builds into the streets and see how they hold up.

Between waves, you can reorganize your backpack, upgrade and merge items, and adjust your build before the next fight.

A few more goals to work toward

I’ve also added new achievements, including challenges for reaching higher waves. If you enjoy seeing how far a build can take you, there are more goals to aim for.

Coming December 3

Nothing Unusual launches on Steam on December 3, 2026. The game is still in development, and the gameplay shown here is work in progress.

If you enjoy backpack builds or want a survival game to play with friends, please consider adding it to your wishlist. Thanks for following along! I’d love to hear what kind of build you want to try.
