First learn the basics of tracking, just the basics, when you got the basics down, get the bloodhound dlc. The dog doesn't make it easier by default, you still have to control it from spooking animals.
The dog does a couple of things, one being companionship wich i really like in such a solitary game, second it helps you rank up faster, and third once you master the dog and it is fully perked out, you got yourself a great assistant for the rest of your hunting journeys.
Just because its not a predator, doesn't mean it can't kill you.
I was hiding in the bushes and got ran over by a group of unsuspecting deer, i nearly died with only having a fraction of my health to cling on. Beware hooves are just as bad as claws.
If you think the game is not thrilling enough, just press play on the following link and let it roll on the background. go start up your game, hunting will never be the same.

inactive track - grey
active track - international orange
spotting outline - international orange
collectible outline - yellow
Grey stands out and is just present enough to be seen. International orange makes the tracks look like fire, looks cool and is very easy to spot. Before international orange, yellow is the most vibrant of all colors. it will help you spot artifacts.
TIP 2: see my guide for beginners
beast weapon.
Edit: I ran into a few players who didn't know this, so I thought it might be worth mentioning.
Edit: Ranger .243 soft-points bullets are free. but other then that, 22lr is the way to go, also small game go down quicker.
I use white for inactive, cyan for active track/outline and red for collectable and so far this works fine for me
You don't play much medved taiga or yukon, do you?
Yukon snow is not constant so isn't an issue, the taiga map I don't play much I only got up to the point of getting Grankins shotgun and thats all I wanted from it (the sound is broke on taiga map currently as well)
All ammo, lures and equipment keep same mass no matter how many you load. For example 5 goose decoys same mass as 20 or whatever.
Have a look at Fandom to see if you can expecr moose, bison, water buffalo, bear or loin. If not leave 7mm and larger at home.
Don't underestimate birds and rabbits. They're worth serious XP and credits.
Get the extra carry capacity ability to use for guns or lures. Stay away from back packs.
In the begging concentrate on all perks and skills which make you less noisy and less visible.
