Unable to read Chinese characters in game chat - only see squares

I got a window 10 and I can read and type Chinese on other apps no problem by using the window 10 simplified Chinese input, but it does not work in game. I can not read the Chinese characters that others type in chat nor the Chinese characters I type in chat, I only see squares. Others said the Chinese characters I input are question marks like "?????".

I had tried the administrative language setting and change system locale to Chinese with and without checking the Beta. This method seems to work for some but it does not work in my case.

Solution found:
Simply change the entire game to Chinese characters from steam library would fix the problem, but I am really not use to read the Chinese translation of the game contents. All I really want is to be able to read and type Chinese in game chat only.

From what I understand, COTW will support CJK (thus Chinese) and Cyrillic scripts, but only if the OS is currently using it as its default. In other words, it sounds like COTW is not Unicode compliant.

I run my OS in English but have Chinese installed for various reasons, and even so, Chinese does not show up when I am certain I am on a Chinese multiplayer server.

If it is important to you, I would suggest contacting support. One of the support guys is Chinese himself, so they might actually be able to help you.

it seems the game doesn't support unicode. you can either set it to Latin Alphabet based languages but it fails to display Russian, Chinese and Japanese. Or you set the game to Russian but it cannot display Chinese or Japanese. Or set it to CN/JP so the game switches to CJK set, but it cannot display Cyrillic. :))
